Nokia's Sea Ray may not be its very-first Windows Phone 7 handset, but it will certainly be one of the first introduced by the manufacturer. Thanks to what looks like an inadvertent leak on the part of Microsoft's Canadian division, we have an idea of what another one of Nokia's first WP7 devices may be, as well as a couple due from Samsung.

Buried in the legalese describing the terms and conditions of a Mango app promotion the company is running, we find a short list of Mango phones being offered as prizes. There's the Sea Ray, of course, accompanied by the Nokia Sabre, Samsung Wembley, and Samsung Yukon.

It's new to us, but apparently the name "Sabre" has popped up very sporadically in discussions of Windows Phone devices over the past several months. Even if it's name was known by some, no one's come forward with any reliable information about the hardware.

Samsung's Yukon and Wembley are a bit more mysterious. They're likely referring to a Samsung model we've already heard of, like the Omnia W or Focus Flash, but which? A little digging-around has turned up some specs which make it look like the Samsung Wembley will be a 1.5GHz device with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED WVGA screen, five-megapixel main camera, and VGA front-facer. Those are close to the specs we're expecting for some Samsung Mango phones, but aren't perfect matches; we'll need to see some more evidence before we can confirm their identities.

American operator T-Mobile was another company that has filed a motion in court asking them not to interfere with sales of handsets Korean company in the U.S. market. Last week, the same request was made by another North American operator - Verizon Wireless. Thus, the operators, for whom it is important that the holidays have been released all announced models, trying to influence the legal battles that erupted between Samsung and Apple. The U.S. company accuses Samsung of patent infringement, protecting intellectual property Apple. This has already led to the suspension of sales of tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in several countries. In the U.S., Apple has filed a lawsuit demanding to ban the sale of the family a number of devices Galaxy. The hearing, which may be adopted such a decision is scheduled for October 13. The statement is at T-Mobile states that ban sales of devices cause no harm to the operator and necessary to its customers, because at this late date, they simply can not provide adequate replacement already announced models. Also notes that T-Mobile has already invested in advertising and devices purchased the necessary equipment for preprazdnichnyh sales. That is, the costs of the company in case of suspension of sales does not pay off. For its part, T-Mobile said their respect for intellectual property, but believes measures to ban sales of "sudden and extraordinary." Of the major North American operators can not express their attitude to a possible ban on sales of Samsung devices at AT & T and Sprint Nextel, and their representatives had no comment.

Samsung has made a certain proposal, which would have solved the patent dispute in Australia, which deals with copyright infringement on the technology used in touch screen devices. Samsung's lawyer, David Katterns (David Catterns) did not specify what kind of proposals submitted for consideration, but an Apple representative, Stephen Berkeley (Steven Burley) has said that his company will take some time to evaluate them. If Apple will offer from Samsung, it will remove the last obstacles in the way of the sale tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. Initially it was assumed that the parties can now finally resolve their dispute, but now it happens a little later. It is assumed that a decision on the infringement of patent rights by Samsung will be made after October 4 (in Australia this weekend). The judge urged both sides not to delay the debate and come to a mutually beneficial solution, at least before the last week of October. With such terms already agreed to by Apple.

Production of a 10.1-inch tablet Amazon Kindle Fire can begin before the end of this year. Although it was reported that the real buyers to the model will reach in 2012, but now DigiTimes reports that in the Amazon, it was decided to move to a more aggressive policy on the dissemination of their tablets. It is also reported that a tablet with a 10-inch screen will be produced at factories Foxconn. This should allow the company to start selling tablets in New Year sales season, which means to get and more profit. Foxconn Company is engaged in the production of devices for reading electronic books for the company's Amazon, but relatively tablets were not known. Unofficially, it has been suggested that the Chinese company took up the execution of an order for the plates, for the reason that has already been downloaded by Apple, which signed a contract for the production of tablets iPad. Relatively Amazon knows that at least Tablet Kindle Fire with 7-inch screen will be produced by Quanta, which was previously a contractor RIM to release BlackBerry PlayBook. Given that the iPad is very popular and the production of plates increases, and vice versa PlayBook has failed project, then we must assume that in the Amazon have the opportunity to sign a contract for production and a 10-inch model at factories Quanta Computers. To date, was announced only tablet Amazon Kindle Fire with 7-inch display, plans to release 10-inch model does not officially reported.

The problem with inadequate supplies of ultra-portable notebook with the Windows operating system can last for 2012, as related to the insufficient production of aluminum enclosures for them. It is reported by news agency DigiTimes. Currently, the largest manufacturers of aluminum panels for notebooks is Foxconn's and Catcher, but they are fully loaded with orders for at least the end of 2011, while the MacBook Air analogues require additional production. This fact negatively affects the supply of Acer Aspire S3, Lenovo IdeaPad U300s and Toshiba Portege Z830. Already it is known that the challenges facing the company Acer, which has in its range not only ultra-compact model with an aluminum body, but also a number of other models which are necessary for aluminum body parts. At the same time, ASUS gets aluminum parts from BYD, so its UX series models should be delivered without delay. On the other hand plans on entering the market ultrabukov consider Dell and HP, but nothing precise about these plans is unknown and the model will be submitted no earlier than 2012. For its part, aluminum parts manufacturers are making efforts to increase production for the last few months have made progress. But enough of them to ensure that all interested persons to compete with the MacBook Air - it is not clear.

Among the browsers that support Yandeks.Probki - updating. Navigators Garmin Nuvi 2xxx series have learned to take time traffic information from a Yandex, display them on a map and used in a route. Also appeared on the screen lights with scores jams. To make things work, you just need to update the firmware device. For information about traffic jams Garmin navigators use a technology called RDS TMC. This method is popular in Europe, and most built-in car navigation device supporting data in this format. Until recently, the Internet connection was the only way to deliver Yandeks.Probki in the navigation program, now you can do with RDS TMC.

Microsoft has accidentally made publicly available the name of a number of devices that must shortly come out with an updated operating system, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. The message appears already well-known Nokia Searay, but with him were named more models Nokia Sabre and two staff from the company Samsung - Yukon and Wembley. With respect to these devices unfortunately are not yet known any details, except Samsung Wembley. Most likely it is a code name that will not conform to the names by which devices come to market. Smartphones Samsung Yukon and Wembley are probably already familiar Samsung Omnia W and Focus Flash, but the known characteristics of Wembley do not correspond exactly to any of them . This model will receive a processor with 1.5 GHz, with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution, 5-megapixel main and front VGA-camera. But about Nokia Sabre is not at all any information. For this project not previously reported any information other than indirect references, but that Sea Ray has other projects and hint that Nokia might show more than one smartphone with WP7 before the end of 2011.

E-Plus Group modernizes optical network to meet mobile broadband demand

Germany’s E-Plus Group offers now improved mobile broadband with higher bandwidth, thanks to an upgraded backbone network deployed by Nokia Siemens Networks. The country-wide upgrade, based on flexible, cost-effective Ethernet technology, covers more than 60 sites. The system also incorporates a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) backhaul platform from ADVA Optical Networking to improve E-Plus’s ability to respond to sudden surges in mobile data traffic.

“The use of mobile Internet and broadband services keeps increasing as users demand anytime, anywhere connectivity,” said Gerhard Lüdtke, director, Access Network of E-Plus Group. “E-Plus implemented a backbone network that is fast and flexible enough to meet the increasing demand. In addition the backbone network provides the cost efficiencies to operate successfully at current traffic volumes.”

“Today, operators need to quickly rise to the challenge of sudden surges in the mobile data traffic,” said Ingo Goldenberg, head of customer team E-Plus Group at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With Ethernet emerging as the dominant technology for cost-effective data transport, E-Plus is ensuring that its investment is well-protected today and in the years to come.”

The backbone network is based on next-generation metro area network (MAN) platforms from Nokia Siemens Networks (the hiT 7070 and hiT 7030 platforms), and its partner ADVA Optical Networking (FSP 3000 platform).

“ADVA Optical Networking’s FSP 3000 platform delivers E-Plus a reliable solution that provides flexibility to add backbone capacity and ensure scalability,” said Hartmut Müller-Leitloff, vice president for sales central Europe at ADVA Optical Networking. “Up to 80 wavelengths per fiber pair, and fully integrated transponder and multiplex transponder options ranging from 100 Mbps to 40 Gbps – and soon 100 Gbps – enable new services and higher customer satisfaction. Multi-degree Reconfigurable Optical add-drop Multiplexer (ROADMs) provides the E-Plus Group highest flexibility to handle future traffic demand in its DWDM backbone.”

With the upgraded backbone network, E-Plus is able to meet different bandwidth needs and respond to sudden traffic surges. Next-generation metro (NGM) platforms link the backbone to network elements such as access systems and routers. This ensures the increased performance is well-distributed throughout the network. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management solution enables E-Plus to manage the NGM end-to-end.

Nokia Siemens Networks was responsible for the complete system integration and project management, using its in-house expertise to ensure that the network meets the business demands of E-Plus and the service demands of its subscribers.

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that it has been selected by Wireless City Planning Inc. (WCP), a leading mobile operator, Softbank’s group company, to deploy the large scale LTE TDD compatible AXGP (Advanced eXtended Global Platform) commercial network in Japan.

At first, the new network will be launched in some parts of Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. It is the fastest mobile broadband network in Japan, offering downlink data speeds of 110Mb/s to provide end users with the highest quality data service experience.

”We are excited about our new partnership with Huawei, and to tap on Huawei’s leadership and expertise in deploying its SingleRAN solution and other advanced mobile communications technology to build Japan’s fastest radio network,” said Mr. Junichi Miyakawa, Director and COO, WCP. “The AXGP network will yield significant competitive advantages for Softbank, and we expect the network to not only consolidate our market leadership but also significantly accelerate the commercialization of mobile broadband technology across Japan for the benefit of our subscribers.”

Taking into consideration the unique characteristics of each city, Huawei provided Softbank with its industry-leading SingleRAN solution, enabling fast and cost-effective deployment of the AXGP network, and ensuring that Softbank’s network is future-proof for the smooth evolution to LTE-Advanced. Highlight features include:

Huawei is confident that our end-to-end SingleRAN solutions, which are based on our strong R&D credentials and track record in delivering quality networks worldwide, will enable Softbank Group to offer its subscribers with the very best in mobile broadband services.”

In addition to radio access network solutions, Huawei also offers a suite of devices that allow more users to enjoy an enhanced mobile broadband experience. These include the LTE TDD/FDD dual-mode USB dongle (E398), LTE TDD/FDD/GSM/UMTS/CDMA multi-mode USB dongle (E392) and the world’s first LTE TDD smart phone.

The first step into mobility was taken thirty years ago. NMT, Nordic Mobile Telephony, was the first generation of mobile telephony and by today’s standards, the bulky telephones are humorous – little did we know then, it was the start of the revolution enabling global mobility.

NMT launched in 1981. In Sweden, the NMT network was shut down on the last day of 2007. The prefix "010" that signified the mobile network is now used as a prefix for corporate exchanges – Ericsson among them.

Televerket, which later became TeliaSonera, was an especially strong advocate of the technology. Ericsson, as a main supplier, was driven to support its customer. Today, the two are still pioneers, being first in the world to launch a commercial 4G network and developing the vision of the Networked Society.

Håkan Dahlström, President of Mobility Services, TeliaSonera, says: "The Nordic NMT-system was groundbreaking, as it provided people in the Nordic countries a totally new possibility of mobile communication."

"The standard we built it on paved the way for GSM and modern mobile communication technology, which now serves a community of more than 5 billion users worldwide. It is a remarkable achievement that no one could ever dream of. And customer demand for communication continues to explode."

Johan Wibergh, head of Ericsson’s Business Unit Networks, says: "The evolution since then has been dramatic. Today, mobile communication is so much more for so many more people. It is an essential part of our daily life, all over the world."

"Our vision of a Networked Society is where people, business and society benefit from using more than 50 billion connected devices. Back in 1981, this was unthinkable. Now it’s close to happening and it’s incredibly exciting," concluded Wibergh.

News CenterLTE: an introduction. What mobile operators need to know Sep 29, 2011 Categories: Industry
The massive consumer engagement with mobile broadband devices and demand for data on the go is increasing at incredible rates. An estimated 5 billion subscriptions will have mobile broadband by 2016. Delivering quality user experiences requires quality technology. That’s why the majority of those people will have their experiences delivered by the evolution of High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long Term Evolution (LTE). So what exactly is LTE?

Hundreds of millions of subscribers across the world are already familiar with mobile broadband, whether surfing the internet or sending emails using HSPA-enabled notebooks; sending and receiving videos or music using 3G phones; or by replacing fixed DSL modems with HSPA modems or USB dongles.

LTE will improve the user experience for such activities and other more data-hungry and demanding activities such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced gaming and professional services.

While LTE will evolve over time, downlink speeds of 100 Mbps can already be achieved via current devices (on a 20MHz bandwidth). In fact, Ericsson has already demonstrated speeds of 1.2 Gbps.

LTE infrastructure is designed to be as simple as possible to deploy and operate via flexible technology that can be used in a wide variety of frequency bands. As of August 2011, LTE is available in more than 160 devices, mainly smartphones, dongles, mifis, tablets and built-in modems.

Our Lite paper – LTE an Introduction – goes into further detail on why LTE is the technology of the future as we move towards the mobile-broadband driven Networked Society.

Safaricom’s over 17 million customers to benefit from fast mobile browser

Kenya’s largest integrated telecoms operator Safaricom, announced the extension of its existing partnership with Opera Software to deliver the Opera Mini browser solution to its more than 17 million subscribers. This includes the launch of a co-branded version of the Opera Mini mobile browser, which is now available for download across Safaricom’s network in Kenya. This is part of a global agreement between Vodafone and Opera Software.

The deal delivers faster access to websites and easy entry to Safaricom portals. Safaricom subscribers can reach the content they want, with less frustration and expense. With just one click, customers have music, news, games, and information on Safaricom’s products and services at their fingertips.

Kenya has 22 million mobile phone users, which is around 55% of the total population. Safaricom, which is 40% owned by Vodafone, is the only network in Kenya that provides broadband high-speed data to its customers through its 3G network, Wimax and fibre. Kenya is also the third largest market in Africa for Opera Mini.

According to Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, the partnership with Opera Software would significantly improve the internet experience of the firm’s growing base of data customers.

“With the launch of the Opera Mini browser, we are leveraging a key partnership to bring our data customers to a new, higher level of experience. This is aligned with our strategy of not just making the internet a mass product in Kenya, but also making it more efficient,” said Collymore.

At least nine out of every ten of the 8 million Kenyans who use the internet regularly do so through the Safaricom network.

Already, 121 million people all over the world have discovered how Opera Mini can revolutionize their mobile web experience. Not only does Opera Mini deliver the Web faster to almost any phone, it also cuts data costs by shrinking the pages down before they are delivered, while retaining all the functionality of a normal webpage.

“Africa is a booming market for us, and this deal with Safaricom will bring the best Internet experience possible to millions of people eager for mobile web access,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Opera believes that Internet access is a universal right, and being part of bringing that to Kenya is key for us. Opera Software has always striven to develop the fastest and technologically most advanced browsers. As a result, the Opera browser is the choice for the majority of mobile web users.”

Research shows that mobile data use in Kenya is predominantly used for social networking, news and job seeking. A key reason for the success of Opera in Africa is its speed: loading Facebook just once on a handheld device will use up more than 200 KB worth of data. With a browser like Opera Mini, which shrinks data down to a fraction of its original size, users can view Facebook 8.5 times using that same 200 KB. At the same time, when the powerful compression technology in the full browser is applied to the Opera Mini browser, the Web is accessible on even the simplest handsets, including those with small screens and limited memory.

About Safaricom

Safaricom offers total communications solutions to a growing clientele in Kenya. With a subscriber base of over 17 million, Safaricom provides a comprehensive range of services under one roof: mobile and fixed voice and data services on a variety of platforms: Kenya’s widest and only 3G network; a growing fibre optic cable footprint and its most expansive WiMAX presence. Safaricom also pioneered commercial mobile money transfer globally through M-PESA, the most successful such service anywhere in the world. The firm is listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange and trades on the Telecommunication and Technology segment. http://www.safaricom.co.ke/

Opera unveils sustainability initiative; announces new data center

The world is ever more interconnected, and data centers are appearing all over the world. Data centers, the mystical warehouses of computers that process everything from your web-based email to compressing web pages for your phone, are on the increase.

More energy is needed to handle the hunger for information, with the mobile Web being one of the fastest growing sectors. The big discussion in the industry has turned from talking about hardware to focusing on the environmental impact of the industry.

Read the whole report here: State of The Mobile Web August 2011

In this month’s State of the Mobile Web report, we take a look at the infrastructure behind the largest mobile browser on the planet, Opera Mini.

Opera relies on a global network of data centers to deliver more than 79 billion pages to Opera Mini users each month. As the mobile Web grows, these data centers use more and more energy. In Opera’s data centers, the web pages are squeezed down in size so virtually all mobile phones can view the Web and save money to boot. With more than 128 million users each month using Opera Mini’s money-saving compression through data centers, the energy use is a significant amount of kilowatt-hours each month.

Today, Opera unveils a new sustainability initiative to ensure Opera Mini’s growth is powered by renewable and sustainable energy sources.

New data centers locations provide efficient cooling and direct access to renewable energy, as seen in the Opera Mini data center in Iceland and the newly unveiled data center in Seattle, USA.
Fresh installs of hardware make for more computing power per energy unit spent, reducing cost and environmental impact.
Tough demands on data center providers to secure minimum amounts of renewable energy has required the Opera Mini servers to be at least 60% renewable today and more than 80% in the future.
“When you live in Norway, you’re surrounded by immense natural beauty. It just makes sense to protect it,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “We’ve always been committed to sustainable practices, but now we are codifying it, so our partners and customers know where we stand. And, I’m pleased to see that we already derive more than half of our energy needs from renewable sources.”

Strong growth

Opera Mini is increasing its user base at a fast pace. The summer months, traditionally a more quiet period for Opera Mini, has not slowed the user increase in 2011:

In August 2011, there were over 128.0 million Opera Mini users, a 5.1% increase from July 2011. Since August 2010, the number of unique users has increased 92.3%.
Opera Mini users generated over 1,232 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since July, the data consumed went up by 5.3%.
If Opera Mini’s users were to view their pages before the money-saving compression of the pages, the amount of data would be a staggering 11.4 petabytes of data in August alone.

NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced that it installed two large-zone base stations for mobile coverage during emergencies in the downtown areas of Nagoya and Gifu cities, two of the more densely populated areas in the Tokai Region between Tokyo and Osaka, which historically has been struck by major earthquakes. Both base stations became operational on September 28.

Large-zone base stations, which are deployed separately from ordinary base stations in times of emergency, are among DOCOMO’s latest efforts to ensure the maintenance of mobile service during blackouts and natural disasters. Capable of sending and receiving signals to/from handsets in 360 degrees over distances of up to approximately seven kilometers, these special base stations are located on high atop extra-earthquake-resistant structures and incorporate independent power supply and redundant transmission lines for uninterrupted service.

DOCOMO will deploy approximately 100 large-zone base stations in densely populated areas nationwide by the end of the year, including five in Tokyo and ten in the Tokai Region that are scheduled to be deployed by the end of October.

With Expert-Tuned Color Accuracy And Wide Viewing Angle, LG’s IPS5 Monitors
Let Users Experience and Share Images As They Were Intended To Be Seen

LG Electronics (LG) has introduced a new monitor series based on in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the IPS5. The IPS5 series is the latest version of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Award winning monitor lineups of the IPS1 and IPS6 series. The IPS5 series has been upgraded with expert color calibration to ensure that colors remain sharp and true. The IPS5 series is equipped with outstanding color reproduction technology intended for enterprise customers and photographers who require bright and realistic images.

“We’re committed to continually improving all aspects of our monitors with the best technology currently available,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “The IPS5 series is proof of that commitment, as these monitors deliver superbly accurate images with true color representation with a wide viewing angle for demanding professionals.”

Expertly Tuned Color Accuracy
By replacing TN (twisted nematic) panels with IPS, the IPS5 series provides exceptionally realistic images with enhanced color accuracy. This accuracy is further assured by a report on color-calibration prepared by LG experts, which accompanies the monitors. The IPS5 series is one of very few high-end professional graphics monitors to offer such a guarantee. In turn, customers can be assured that onscreen colors are identical to real-life colors.

Consistent Color Tone Through Consistent Color Temperature
The IPS5 monitors maintain color temperatures at an optimum level of around 6,500K (Kelvin), enabling reproductions of colors closest to the original. This consistency helps retain color impressions identical to those on the original image, so viewers can always see the image as it was intended.

Color Shift Free
Thanks to an alchemic convergence of IPS and LED, the new IPS5 monitors deliver highly advanced picture quality without any color shift. They also greatly extend viewing angle, ensuring viewers see crisp, realistic pictures from almost any position in front of the screen.

With its Dual Package feature, the IPS5 allows easy configuration of a second display, such as setting the split main monitor screen in dual mode, connecting a second monitor with a single click and showing the task bar on both monitors. Additionally, the Super Energy Saving technology makes the IPS5 as eco-friendly as it is technologically sophisticated. The IPS5P series is ergonomically designed with a height-adjustable stand which can be adjusted to almost any angle.

The IPS5 series is available this month while the IPS5P will be introduced in Europe in November.
