New estimated closing in the beginning of 2012
Ericsson and Telcordia confident in the progress of the approval process
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) informs that the acquisition of Telcordia will likely not close before year-end as originally forecasted when the agreement was announced on June 14, 2011.

With approvals still outstanding from certain government authorities and as we are in the holiday season, the original estimate of closing by year-end is likely not probable.

Both companies continue to work diligently with the government authorities in order to close the acquisition as soon as possible. Our new estimate is in the beginning of 2012.

On June 14, 2011, Ericsson announced that it had entered into a merger agreement with Providence Equity Partners, LLC and Warburg Pincus to acquire 100 percent of the shares of Telcordia for USD 1.15 billion in an all cash transaction, on a cash and debt-free basis. The transaction includes approximately 2,600 employees and Telcordia's customer base.

A new Ericsson ConsumerLab report shows that consumers who live in urban environments are ready to “mobilize” their everyday activities by integrating their daily routines into the mobile phone. The report found that 90 percent of interviewees never leave home without their mobile phone.

Consumers ready to mobilize daily activities


Mobile broadband coverage to 90 percent of the rural population of Chile, incorporating some of the most difficult terrain on Earth, shows what is possible when telecom vendor, operator and government work in partnership.

The three-way public-private initiative between Chile’s Ministry of Telecommunications, Ericsson and Chilean operator Entel has helped transform the lives of people and businesses in remote areas of the South American country, as well as paving the way towards participation in the Networked Society.

Nicolás Brancoli, head of Ericsson’s Customer Unit Chile, Ecuador and Peru, describes the relationship as a "golden triangle," in which the three partners share a vision for the country.

Brancoli is joined in our film by Pedro Pablo Errázuriz, Chile’s Telecommunications Minister, and Antonio Büchi, CEO of Entel PCS, to outline their views on the partnership and the success it has delivered.


In the first part of our new LTE article series, we look at why consistently good user experience demands an end-to-end ecosystem approach.

LTE 4G technology offers mobile operators great potential to deliver a superior mobile broadband experience to their customers, but the stakes are high. Success in LTE means getting to market quickly, with services that offer subscribers something more than they have today, as cost-effectively as possible.

Ericsson has long highlighted the importance of taking a holistic, end-to-end approach to mobile network deployment in order to get the best possible performance. The experience the company has gained over many years of deploying end-to-end 2G and 3G networks is even more relevant in the successful roll-out and development of LTE.

A key reason for this is that user expectations of availability and performance have risen significantly since mobile broadband was first introduced. With their LTE 4G networks, operators need to deliver an even better mobile broadband experience, faster than ever before, at lower cost per bit than ever before.

By being able to address the entire LTE ecosystem – including everything from devices and device interoperability testing, through radio, backhaul and core networks, to applications, operational support systems and services – Ericsson is helping operators meet these expectations with LTE networks that perform well from day one.

This ability to address the whole ecosystem consistently becomes even more important as new capabilities like LTE Advanced, IPv6, Self-Organizing Network (SON), Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) solutions are introduced into LTE.

Getting the most out of LTE networks is all about understanding the contribution of every component, and ensuring that they work together in a synchronized and consistent way to optimize performance.

A case in point is the Automatic Neighbor Relations (ANR) feature – which for many operators is the first step in the implementation of SON solutions. Managing neighbor cell relations to ensure optimal traffic handling for user devices is one of the most labor-intensive activities mobile operators must undertake, and the introduction of LTE multiplies the effort needed.

By automatically setting up necessary neighbor relationships based on actual network conditions, ANR prevents failed hand-overs caused by ‘missing’ neighbors. It continuously secures and improves network performance, and reduces the need for manual planning and establishment of neighbor relations.

Ericsson’s ability to drive developments both in the radio network and in the LTE device ecosystem has been instrumental in ensuring the availability and success of ANR in live 4G networks. ANR has been shown to deliver a 90 percent reduction in overall network planning effort, by eliminating initial planning and optimization, along with 100 percent hand-over success thanks to accurate and timely addition of neighboring cells.

What does this ability to address the entire ecosystem mean in the real world of actual LTE user experience? Independent analysts are providing some of the answers. In its September 2011 report, ‘Mother of all Network Benchmark Tests’, Signals Research Group found that in one major US city, Ericsson’s LTE network was found to outperform another vendor’s significantly in both downlink and uplink throughput performance. Extensive drive tests showed that the Ericsson-delivered LTE network offered more than 20 percent faster median download rates and three times faster median upload rates than the competitor’s.

So when it comes to delivering an enhanced mobile broadband user experience, it seems overall LTE performance really is more than the sum of its parts.

The report also indicates, among other things, that at this early stage of 3G development, the current Chinese mobile broadband users covered in our study regard mobile broadband as a complement to fixed broadband and prefer the two services to be combined in a single package from the same operator/service provider. It also suggests that smartphones’ potential will be determined by offerings and price.The 2011 Mobile Broadband in China study was conducted during July and August of 2011. More than 2,200 internet users in all Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities in China were interviewed, 1,300 of whom are mobile broadband users. Laptops are mostly used at fixed locations for planned and continuous internet access because they offer high data-processing speeds and relatively large amounts of storage. Smartphones are mostly for fragmented, discontinuous and spontaneous usage due to their mobility, which enable users to gain quick access to the internet. Tablet computers are mostly for planned mobile use, since they offer an improved internet experience compared to smartphones, as well as enhanced mobility and longer battery life.In addition to smartphones, tablets and laptops, consumers also want their other devices to be connected to the internet. TV sets (22 percent), digital/video cameras (19 percent) and portable multimedia players (18 percent) top the wish list, with mobile broadband being the preferred service type for portable devices.Locations, devices and data usageDifferent devices are used to access the internet in different locations. The study has found that smartphones are the best devices for accessing the internet outdoors. The mobility of laptops is declining and users are now less willing to use them outdoors as they are relatively heavy. Tablet computers, meanwhile, are increasing both the variety of locations in which mobile broadband is used and the amount of data consumed, due to their improved mobility.The study also found that smartphone users are more inclined to opt for mobile broadband, while laptop and tablet users prefer fixed broadband to Wi-Fi. Mobile broadband users on smartphones spend 70 percent of their time on mobile broadband and 30 percent on Wi-Fi. Mobile broadband users on tablets, meanwhile, spend 49 percent of their time on mobile broadband and 51 percent on a fixed connection or Wi-Fi. Finallly, mobile broadband users on laptops spend 54 percent of their time on a fixed connection, 24 percent on mobile broadband and 21 percent on Wi-Fi.Compared with fixed broadband, mobile broadband traffic is low, as it is used for short time periods for intense bursts of interaction, such as browsing the news, searching for information and instant messaging.Challenges for the development of mobile broadbandFor mobile broadband users, the main factors that affect satisfaction and usage are price, speed, network stability and coverage. For both data card users and smartphone users, price is the biggest obstacle. It is not so much that the price is too high, but rather that they feel restricted in that they have to pay a fixed price for a certain amount of data or minutes of usage.When considering a data card service, users usually look at price, data caps and their own fixed broadband usage habits. If a mobile broadband service cannot match the coverage, network stability and speed of a comparably priced fixed broadband service, users will think that the mobile broadband service is too expensive. In addition, consumers are used to the idea of a monthly flat rate. In their minds, data usage should not dictate price.Smartphone users who are unfamiliar with mobile broadband think that the service is very expensive as the structuring of data packages is complex and they find it difficult to predict how much they will be asked to pay at the end of the month.SummaryMobile broadband services almost always come with data caps and users always assume that the caps are too low. However, the study found that 53 percent of data card users and 42 percent of 3G smartphone users have never used up their quota of data. On one hand, many users control their data usage carefully to avoid having to pay an extra fee for exceeding the cap. On the other hand, users do not know much about data traffic and find it difficult to gauge data usage. Therefore, providing a pricing plan that is not based on data volumes will increase data usage and, to a degree, attract more users.The availability of devices will also play a major role in determining the development of mobile broadband in China, where relatively few people own laptop computers. The study shows that laptop users are more inclined to use fixed connections to access the internet, while smartphone users prefer to use mobile broadband. Forty-three percent of smartphone users involved in the study say they are more inclined to use 3G networks, while 70 percent of interviewees think this is the best type of connection for smartphone users. In addition, the use of smartphones has increased the popularity of instant and interactive services, which also indicates that smartphones will become one of the major drivers of mobile broadband development.

If the network in the Shinjuku station area of Tokyo can cope with the highest density of subscribers imaginable, then you have nothing to worry about. The problem isn’t network capacity. In preparing for heterogeneous networks, operators should start by improving the macro layer. By doing this, they can create enough network capacity to handle even the most extreme case of smartphone-traffic onslaught and avoid the pitfall of premature over-investment in smaller nodes.Approximately 3.5 million subscribers every business day are on the move in the square kilometer surrounding Tokyo’s Shinjuku station. The challenge for the operator was to build a network with world-class smartphone capacity in an area with the highest concentration of smartphone users in the world.Network performance should be improved by carefully following the stepwise process of building a heterogeneous network. First, macro-network performance is enhanced. Second, all available spectrum is used. Only at this point, if additional network capacity and improved coverage are still required, should densification of macro sites be considered. The last step of the process involves adding low-power nodes. If the process is not followed in the right order then the end result is likely to be a network that is sub-optimized.

No replacement as Chief Brand Officer will be recruited
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced that Cesare Avenia will step down from his role as Chief Brand Officer. Cesare Avenia was appointed Chief Brand Officer (CBO) in November 2009, taking on the global responsibility for driving the implementation of Ericsson's new brand strategy. The initial phase of that implementation is now completed and responsibility for the next steps will be transferred to the line organization.

Hans Vestberg, CEO and President of Ericsson, said, "Cesare Avenia was appointed to the important task of brand implementation due to his extensive experience and deep knowledge of the company and our customers. He has done a tremendously good job over the years in leading the first, critical phase of repositioning our brand to capture the new opportunities arising in the market."

Cesare Avenia said, "I am confident that the organization we established during this period will continue to drive the brand positioning efforts forward successfully. Ericsson has an exciting journey and future ahead."

The Chief Brand Officer role will not be replaced. This role and responsibility of brand strategy and implementation in the Executive Leadership Team will be a shared responsibility by Helena Norrman, Head of Group Function Communications and Jan Wäreby, Head of Group Function Sales & Marketing.

Competitive analysis firm Current Analysis has upgraded its rating of Ericsson’s IP portfolio, heaping praise on the company’s transport and routing capabilities in the process. The analysts say Ericsson’s 4th Generation IP products and leadership in wireless technology offer operators a unique combination of expertise.

Following analysis in five Service Provider Infrastructure categories – solutions, products/roadmap, service/support, strategy/execution, momentum/traction – Ericsson’s overall ranking, or "threat index" as Current Analysis calls its rating system, increased to "Leader", the highest classification possible.

Current Analysis concludes that the Ericsson transport and routing portfolio is designed for operators to deliver an efficient transition to an all-IP services infrastructure. The company reviewed Ericsson’s Smart Service Router (SSR), Smart Packet portfolio, Smart Packet Optical (SPO) portfolio, as well as Ericsson’s IP Transport Network Management System – part of Ericsson’s Operational Support Systems (OSS) portfolio. Current Analysis noted that the portfolio is set to deliver results to operators through Ericsson’s "4th Generation IP Networking" vision.

Report author Glen Hunt is Current Analysis Principal Analyst for Service Provider Infrastructure. He says: "Ericsson’s leadership in wireless, combined with the benefits of its 4th Generation IP, offers carriers a unique combination of expertise that could result in potentially massive opex and capex savings, through end-to-end solutions for mobile backhaul, multi-service edge, terabit routing with the SSR 8000 series, IP RAN and optical transport networks."

Ericsson’s first release of the SSR 8000 family service aware edge routing and application platform, and analysis of the SPO 1460 shipping status were key factors in Ericsson’s rating increase, according to Current Analysis.

Ericsson and Telefónica’s smart transport solution has been recognized during the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Momentum for Change Initiative at COP 17.

The initiative recognizes lighthouse projects which address climate change mitigation or adaptation.

Ericsson, along with Telefónica in Brazil (Telefônica | Vivo) and its partner, collaborated on the smart transport solution based on mobile broadband.

This enabled the introduction of electronic ticketing and fleet management systems using M2M technology, making life simpler and more secure for Curitiba’s 3,2 million metropolitan inhabitants while reducing fuel cost and CO2 emissions.

Through these lighthouse projects, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat seeks to build momentum for the evolving climate agenda. The launch was inaugurated with the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Christiana Figueres and South African President Jacob Zuma on December 6.

Matilda Gennvi Gustafsson, Sustainability Director, Ericsson, and Luciano Queiroz, Data Solutions Manager, Telefônica|Vivo, presented Curitiba case for the UN officials on-site.

Queiroz says: "Telefónica's main goal is to provide more and better services for our customers to be able to connect themselves however they wish. The system in Curitiba makes life much simpler for passengers, especially when it comes to buying and using tickets. It is a good example of how our company brings mobile broadband to citizens especially in Latin America to make our daily life much more efficient, safer and greener."

Matilda Gennevi Gustafsson said: "In order to meet the needs of the 9 billion people estimated to populate the world by 2050, there must be a shift from incremental to transformative solutions to solve climate change. The opportunity for the transformational power of ICT to put us on the path of a low-carbon economy and spur socio-economic development has never been greater."

Professor Lord Nicholas Stern of Brentford, chair of Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, said: "It is by learning from the existing excellent, indeed inspirational, examples that we can help gather the momentum required to drive towards a new energy and industrial revolution. We are going to have to change the way we do things on scale and across the whole economy, but the learning we get from these projects will be vital in the story of innovation and growth that we must turn into reality."

Smarter public transport is an increasingly popular way for cities to minimize their carbon footprints. Using mobile broadband, cities and regions can improve the efficiency of their own bus, train and tram services and attract more people to switch from private vehicles to public transport, reducing traffic congestion, fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) announced that Håkan Eriksson, Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, Head of Group Function Technology & Portfolio Management and Head of Ericsson in Silicon Valley, will take on a new role as head of Ericsson's business in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Appointed Group CTO in 2003, Håkan Eriksson has been instrumental in building Ericsson's technology leadership across many technology standards. During his 25 years in the company Håkan Eriksson has been driving the industry development and under his leadership the research organization has made significant accomplishments, mainly in the wireless area, but lately also in the IP and Application domain, and built the industry's strongest patent portfolio.

As head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, Håkan Eriksson has also contributed to firmly establishing Ericsson on the important US market, as well as well building a stronger relation with the Application development eco system in the area.

With an Australian wife Håkan Eriksson is no stranger to the country. "I have had a desire to move into a more commercial role, and for personal reasons to come closer to Australia. When Hans offered me this opportunity, that coincide with my term in Silicon Valley coming to an end, I jumped at the chance to work with the technology advanced operators in these countries and become part of the strong regional Ericsson team", said Håkan Eriksson.

The new appointment will be effective as of February 1, 2012 at which time Håkan Eriksson will also leave Ericsson's Executive Leadership Team. The appointment of a new CTO will be announced separately.

The world’s media spotlight will shine this week on Stockholm and Oslo for the Nobel Prize award ceremonies, among the most prestigious annual events on the planet. Ericsson is a proud partner of Nobel Media, which aims to spread knowledge and inspiration about Nobel-Prize-winning achievements.

Most people with access to education are aware of the Nobel Prizes. Children around the world learn how Alfred Nobel, the Swede who invented dynamite, wanted his legacy to recognize and support achievements in arts and sciences that improve and advance humankind.

Some of the most famous names in recent history have been honored by the Nobel institutions. Lists of Nobel Laureates in the five scientific categories – Medicine, Literature, Physics, Economics and Chemistry – across the 111 years of the awards generally equate to a who’s who of achievers in their respective fields. A Nobel Prize is seen by many as the ultimate recognition an individual or organization can receive for work or contribution to society.

Pioneering developments in communications have been recognized by Nobel Prize committees since the early days of the awards. Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi was named joint Physics Laureate in 1909 “in recognition of contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy”.

So this year’s winners – Bruce Beutler/Jules Hoffmann and Ralph Steinman (Medicine); Tomas Tranströmer (Literature); Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt and Adam Reiss (Physics); Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims (Economics); Daniel Shechtman (Chemistry); and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf/Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman (Peace) – join an exclusive club.

The announcement about the year’s Nobel Laureates every October and the award ceremonies in December may be the highlight of the Nobel Prize, but Nobel Media’s work goes on throughout the year.

1996 Chemistry Laureate Sir Harry Kroto, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University also participated in NEST.

ICT is making information available to everyone. Professor Dan Shechtman, winner of 2011 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, says technology can help overcome barriers to education.

The professor of materials science at Technion Israel Institute of Technology won this year’s Chemistry prize for his discovery of quasicrystals, a discovery described as altering chemists’ understanding of solid matter.

He also says young people’s natural desire for communication should be harnessed as an educational tool.

Infonetics Research analyst Jeff Heynen highlights the challenges facing fixed-broadband operators, and predicts how increasing uptake of cloud-based services may impact on access networks.

Heynen explains why be believes operators will want to extend the life of their copper networks to get maximum return on investment.

He also highlights Ericsson’s advantages when it comes to fiber access.

"I believe Ericsson’s strategic differentiators in fiber access today are the fact that they have worldwide deployments with operators at every level, from tier one to municipalities and utilities," he says. "They have developed the business model and business cases, and can also provide the systems-integration capabilities that operators are looking for to determine whether fiber access is the right business model for them."

Expectations of the impact of mobile broadband triggered a scramble for 3G spectrum in Europe in the early 2000s. Bidding wars followed as operators paid huge sums to secure precious licenses. But it soon emerged that the technology wasn’t able to deliver on the hype. In the third film in our history of mobile broadband series, senior ICT industry figures look back on the path to the crash and the shoots of recovery though HSPA.

Participants give their views on why they think the crash happened, how it impacted on various players in the industry and how spectrum allocation differed in Europe and Japan.

They also reflect on 3G video calling, the early differentiator from 2G services. But that too had its problems, requiring the reintroduction of a 100-year-old business model of selling phones in pairs. The service never took off.

The first real indications of 3G technology delivering on its potential came later, with the move to HSPA.

New network functionality provided by Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) technology enables best available data speeds for smartphones combined with telecom quality voice services from operators’ existing 2G and 3G networks

Worldwide, about 150 million people currently have access to LTE networks, which are now mostly used for data services. During the second half of 2011, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) began the commercial deployment of CSFB technology, providing consumers with telecom quality voice and SMS services in LTE smartphones on the global GSM/WCDMA market. This 3GPP standardized functionality has now been deployed in several networks in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

"We now introduce telecom grade voice services to work in combination with the superior data connection speeds that are available in LTE smartphones for the global GSM/WCDMA market. Circuit Switched Fallback network functionality means that mobile broadband data traffic is run over LTE, or HSPA when LTE coverage is not available, while voice and SMS services are provided using GSM or WCDMA circuit-switched networks.

CSFB is a software upgrade to operators’ core and radio networks, which include circuit-switched core (Mobile Softswitch Solution), Evolved Packet Core (Serving GPRS Support Node-Mobility Management Entity or SGSN-MME) and radio access (GSM, WCDMA and LTE).

Ericsson also offers a complete end-to-end solution portfolio for providing voice over LTE based on VoLTE (GSMA IR92), enabling the commercial launch of telecom quality voice and new multimedia services using pure all-IP LTE networks.

*1. AR = Augmented Reality

 Sony has developed integrated ‘Augmented Reality (hereafter referred to as ‘AR’) technology’ called as “Smart AR.” When capturing visuals through a camera on a device such as a smartphone, the technology enables additional information to be displayed on the device’s screens such as virtual objects, or images and texts that cannot be identified by visual perception alone. The technology employs the markerless approach, forgoing any requirement for special markers such as 2D barcodes. The object captured by the camera is quickly recognized and can be tracked at high-speed along with the movement of the camera, as it is displayed over the actual 3D space.


  AR technology has recently been the subject of much interest, and is being used in a variety of applications such as advertisements, promotions, games, and information searches. Sony began researching AR in 1994 with two-dimensional barcodes recognition (marker approach), and in 1998, it developed VAIO “PCG-C1” personal computers equipped with software which automatically recognized ‘CyberCode*2.’

  “SmartAR” technology combines ‘object recognition technology’ (markerless approach in which no special markers are required) for recognition of general objects such as photographs and posters with Sony’s own proprietary ‘3D space recognition technology,’ which has been fostered through the research of robots such as “AIBO” and “QRIO.” With “SmartAR” technology objects can be recognized and tracked at high-speed. In addition to displaying virtual objects or additional image or text information (hereafter, ‘AR information’), the technology also facilitates the expression of AR information over an extended space, thus producing a dynamic, large-scale AR experience.

  Furthermore, information can be acquired or navigated by simply touching the AR information directly on the screen of the smartphone or other device, thus achieving an intuitive and seamless user interface that is unique to “SmartAR.”

  Sony will continue to experiment with “SmartAR” technology with the aim to add new value for various services and business applications such as advertising and games.
< Main features >
(1) Object recognition that enables the markerless approach
  AR information can be displayed on the captured image which appears on a device’s screen, including those images that do not have any special markers for AR. This technology is also compatible with image recognition technologies that use conventional markers (such as “CyberCode*2”). Because “SmartAR” can recognize everyday objects such as posters and menus, it has the potential for a wide variety of applications.

  “SmartAR” object recognition technology identifies objects by analyzing features detected from a portion of the image (hereafter, ‘local features’) together with their positional relationship. Our feature matching technology that employs a proprietary probabilistic method that matches local features with minimal calculations enables high-speed recognition that is resistant to changes in lighting or the position of the object. In addition, recognition is still possible even if the object captured appears to be comparatively small in the display.

(2) High-speed tracking (‘rapid & accurate’)
  Sony achieved its natural-feeling ‘rapid & accurate’ AR by quickly displaying AR information on the screen and then tracking the camera’s movements at high-speed. This has been realized by combining object recognition technology with our proprietary matching technology that uses features detected from a portion of the image (‘local features’) and image tracking technology that is capable of dealing with changes in the shape of the object.

(3) 3D space recognition
  With our dynamic, large-scale AR, virtual objects can be merged with 3D structures detected in the physical world. For example, even if the AR image is a gigantic virtual character whose size exceeds the dimensions of the device’s screen, the technology allows the user to grasp the entirety of the virtual character when the camera is moved around. Furthermore, it is also possible to move the virtual object in the actual 3D space as if it were really there.

  Three-dimensional space recognition technology is based on use of the disparity observed by the camera movements to estimate the shape of the 3D space and the position and angle of the camera. By combining this with object recognition technology, devices become capable of identifying and remembering 3D space constructions.

(4) AR Interaction
  Information can be intuitively acquired and navigated by directly touching the AR information displayed on the smartphone or device’s screen. The distinctiveness of “SmartAR” technology comes from the user interface which enables users to naturally use and operate additional information and virtual objects.
