Became most downloaded application within one month of its debut

Just ahead of the festive season of Diwali, Samsung India gave its users one more reason to cheer by adding Opera Mini to their Java App Store. Used by over 144 million people across the world, Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile browser. Samsung users in India welcomed Opera Mini on its first arrival with open arms and made it the #1 most downloaded application within one month of its debut on the store.

Samsung’s Java Apps Store is a marketplace designed to provide a variety of mobile applications especially developed and carefully selected for Samsung mobile phones. It can be accessed by all Samsung Java phone users from http://m.in.samsungapps.com. Opera Mini is available as a free download there.

Opera Mini is a fast and compact web browser that allows you to access the Internet on your phone. By downloading Opera Mini, you can use your cell phone to access websites and content, including your mail, community sites, news, blogs and more. When using Opera Mini, webpages are optimized and compressed before being sent to your phone. Therefore, the data transferred to your phone is significantly reduced, making mobile surfing cheaper. Opera Mini works on more than 3,000 mobile phone models, ranging from basic Java phones to the latest OS.

“Indians are gradually shifting their mobile usage habits from just being voice and text based to content based,” said Sarfaraz Borah, Senior Manager, Apps & Services, Samsung Mobile India. “Serving Opera Mini on the India App Store brings us one step closer in providing our users with an optimized browser best suited for Java phones on Indian mobile networks.”

“India ranks #2 in the overall usage of Opera Mini across the world. Statistics also show that most mobile web surfers in India prefer Opera Mini to browse on their phones,” adds Sunil Kamath, Sales Director for India & SAARC, Opera Software. “Our partnership with Samsung India will help us further reach out to the millions of Samsung Java phone users in the country who seek a better browsing experience.”

Opera 11.60 satisfies holiday techno-lust

Just in time for the holiday season, Opera Software is proud to release Opera 11.60, the newest version of Opera’s desktop browser. Almost 50% of the world’s population has never tried a new browser — people in your own town, maybe even someone you know. Why not help them discover something better this year? A new browser is a gift that keeps giving all year round.

“It’s better to give than to receive, so why not give that special someone a new browser,” says Jan Standal, VP of desktop products at Opera Software. “People spend more time working with their browser than they do with their car, so it makes sense to shop around and consider their options. If your best friend drove a Yugo, you’d help them find something else, right?”

Using yet another clever car analogy, Standal continues: “If we were a car, this browser would be an extremely potent, yet comfortable, four-by-four. Sleek and stylish, and with no CO2 emissions whatsoever. Your neighbors will envy you.”

Millions of people have never stepped out of the comfort zone of their computer’s default browser, so we produced a list of 10 reasons why now is the perfect time to move away from the boring browser that came with your computer and try something new, Opera perhaps.

You clean everything to prepare for the holiday, why not your computer?
No assembly required; it’s all in the download package.
It is free, a deal year-round, rather than a Black Friday doorbuster.
Unlike socks, this fits everyone.
We tried not to say it, so we misspelled it: IT’S FSAT.
Justin Bieber doesn’t use it.
It’s supported by science since version 10 (at least): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYEUFwJXVvw.
Your kids won’t wake you up at the crack of dawn Christmas morning; they’ll be too busy with the browser.
See #6.
Your current browser is so fat it can’t slide down the chimney.
Not convinced yet?

Four things to look forward to in Opera 11.60:

Like it? Star it: Add your favorite sites to your Speed Dial by clicking the new Star button.
You’ve got a new mail... client: Opera’s email client has been redesigned to keep with the company’s featherweight design aesthetic.
Better compatibility for the Web: Opera includes the new HTML5 parsing algorithm which helps unify code discrepancies among browsers.

Opera Mini mobile browsers to ship worldwide on MediaTek’s MRE Platform
Oslo, Norway and Taipei, Taiwan — December 2, 2011

Opera Software and MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, announced that Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile browser, will be included into MediaTek’s Runtime Environment (MRE).

MRE is MediaTek’s innovative middleware technology designed for mobile developers and application providers to deploy services and content for “smart-feature-phones”. The MRE solution provides millions of users in emerging markets with the ability to enjoy rich mobile Internet experiences previously available only on smartphones. This partnership will allow users of handsets powered by MediaTek’s MRE platform to enjoy the best and most affordable Internet experience.

Opera Mini has an impressive user base, with more than 140 million users each month and growing. It offers cloud-assisted browsing, where its renowned compression technology reduces data load by up to 90% before sending it to phones. This results in a much faster page-loading speed on a limited bandwidth connection, as well as lower data costs.

“MediaTek and Opera Software share the same vision. We both want people to access the Web on their own terms,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software. “The MRE solution makes the traditional feature phone smarter and, at the same time, delivers the best user experience. Opera Mini makes the Web an enjoyable experience regardless of bandwidth. We look forward to seeing the next billion people to surf with Opera Mini on MRE-powered phones.”

MediaTek is the world’s largest mobile chipset platform provider, shipping over 500 million units in 2010, for assembly into a wide range of mobile phones distributed worldwide.

Opera Software joined a pan-European coalition to improve the Web for the next generation of surfers. “A Better Place for Kids”, an initiative coordinated by the European Commission to make the Web a safer and more enjoyable space to be a kid, is welcomed by web browser company Opera Software.

The coalition seeks to make the Internet safer for kids by focusing on age-appropriate privacy settings, wider use of content classification and parental control, a system for single-click reporting on websites, and effective removal of child abuse material.

“In today’s kids we see a generation that has never known life without the Internet,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “It is wonderful to grow up during the greatest information revolution in history, but it also brings a need great responsibility among those who build the Internet. With this initiative we hope to make the Web a better place to be young, a place where kids can roam, learn and have fun in a safe environment without limiting the free use of the Web.”

The first steps in the coalition action plan are expected to be implemented over the course of 2012, along with regular progress reviews of the coalition’s work.

“This new Coalition should provide both children and parents with transparent and consistent protection tools to make the most of the online world,” said Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice President. “The founding Coalition members are already leaders in children’s safety online. Working together we will be setting the pace for the whole industry and have a great basis for fully empowering children online.”

Along with other software manufacturers and content providers, Opera Software backs the European Commission’s initiative and hopes it can serve as a blueprint for similar solutions globally.

Opera Software skates onto the rink

Opera Software announced its strategic partnership with the Boston Sitniks, an up-and-coming hockey team in the United States, largely powered by Russian ex-pats. The goal of the partnership is to further strengthen Opera’s presence in the U.S. market and to learn from the Sitniks’ team spirit.

Opera Software’s CEO, Lars Boilesen, from the great hockey-nation of Denmark, explained: “This is a natural step for us now. Even with over 220 million users all over the world, we know we have great upside within the Russian-sports-fan-demographic of the Southie area of Boston.”

Opera set out to find a partner that perfectly suited its browsers, which are faster, save people money and provide the best Internet experience, no matter what device they use. When Opera didn’t manage to find such a partner, they simply decided to go with the Sitniks.

“Teaming up with the Sitniks will make us a household name in ten to twenty American homes. I look forward to following this team closely this season. You say this is not real hockey? It is. You can tell from the hockey sticks, the hockey puck and the rink. This is definitely real ice. See, it’s slippery,” said Boilesen.

The player-coach of the Boston Sitniks, Jared Gordon, also sees a great future for the relationship.

“Normally, these sponsorships are brokered by agents and lawyers, but when Opera had its own talent scouts in the area, we jumped at the chance. Luckily for us, they missed the game, but our never-accept-defeat attitude at the after-game party clearly is a bonus,” said Gordon.

The parties spent some time negotiating the agreement, and both sides are now proudly aligning forces to push for the championship. To boost morale on both sides, the mandatory corporate team video was produced and is now being made public for the first time. This video would make Bob and Doug proud!

“So many businesses are so serious about their sports, but we think the most important thing is having the right attitude. It should be fun, and we really believe our users benefit more from this collaboration, much more than Energizer battery buyers benefit from them sponsoring the NHL,” said Boilesen.

Eleven new countries each surpassed one million monthly Opera Mini users this year, according to the newest State of the Mobile Web report from Opera Software. Twenty-two countries in total now have more than one million active Opera Mini users each month. The report, which details the full list of countries is available from http://www.opera.com/smw/.

More than 140 million people used Opera Mini last month, with usage growing 83 percent in the last year. As of October 2011 Opera Mini usage has doubled eight times since its introduction.

“Opera Mini has gained users in every country, across 2G, 3G and 4G networks, across feature phone and smartphones,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “What these numbers won’t tell you is that many people use Opera Mini as their only means to get online. We’re seeing a whole new generation of people connect to the Web for the first time using a mobile device and we are only starting to see the changes — societal, technological, and cultural — that will happen as a result.”

In October 2011, Opera Mini users viewed 86 billion pages, up 107 percent year-over-year. Those page views accounted for almost 13 petabytes of data through operator networks. Due to Opera Mini’s data-crunching compression technology, those petabytes were cut down to just 1,335 terabytes of data. Over the past 12 months, data usage has surged 121percent. For the curious user, just press “help” and choose “data savings” in your Opera Mini browser to see how much data you have saved.

In addition, the browser Opera Mobile 11.5 also now supports Symbian S60. The release of new versions held three weeks after the announcement of an exclusive Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 for Android. One of the main features of Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 - the opportunity to live mode to assess exactly how much data (in many cases is equivalent to money), the user saves on the mobile Internet. With the ability to compress traffic up to 90%, Opera Mini is a good tool for cost optimization. Both mobile browser - Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 - equipped with a counter of received and transmitted data in the Help section, right in the menu. Evaluate the savings due to compression as possible for the current session, and for all while using the browser. Make your favorite sites to your bookmarks or start page mobile browsers Opera easier than ever. Now you can do this by clicking on the star in the address field. Home (Speed Dial) - a convenient screen to move to nine favorite sites in one click. In Opera Mini traffic saving function is always enabled - this cloud your browser can not operate without it. In addition, Opera Mini is suitable for low cost handsets, built-in browsers that do not allow you to open full web pages. Opera Mobile is also able to save bandwidth, but this browser for the data compression is optional - you can enable or disable the menu. Opera Mini 6.5 is available in Apple App Store and Android Market, it can also be downloaded at m.opera.com for Symbian S60, BlackBerry and Java-phones. Opera Mobile is available for download from the Android Market, as well as at m.opera.com for phones running Symbian S60.

Save money with new versions of Opera for phones out now

The heady days of free data usage at a fixed price are drawing to an end, but, fret not, as you can still enjoy the mobile web experience. Today, Opera Software released the Opera Mini browser in version 6.5 for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Symbian S60 and Java-enabled phones. As an added bonus, the Opera Mobile 11.5 browser is now also available on Symbian S60. Fresh off the heels of releasing Android versions, the new browser now enables consumers to keep better track of data costs when surfing the Web. By saving up to 90% of data cost, Opera Mini lets you save money and more:

Short on battery and no charger in sight? Turn off the 3G option for the rest of the day, and use Opera Mini to surf — saving battery and time.
Want to keep more cash in your pocket each month? Cancel the all-you-can-eat data plan and conserve data by skipping videos and by using Opera Mini to surf instead of using apps.
Did you read the story about the $200,000 phone bill from roaming? So did we. Our suggestion for roaming; turn off data usage until you really need it, and if you do, use Opera Mini to conserve as much data as possible. And, don’t watch videos on your phone.
Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 both contain a nifty feature to keep track of your data usage. A data counter, located under the “Help” menu in both products let you keep a tally of your web surfing usage. Two different counters, one for total usage and one for temporary usage, let you stay in charge of your data usage if you need to watch the data cap or costs.

“There are a lot of ways to save money on your mobile phone bill and avoid getting hit with nasty coverage charges on your cell phone bill and the new data counter in Opera Mini and Opera Mobile is one of those tools,” says Phillip Grønvold, Product Manager for Mobile, Opera Software. “The data counter instantly shows people how much they have saved, and I guess a really good press release would make that more important, but the PR people told me to stick it all the way down here.”

You’re a star, baby!

Oh, look there! What’s that star in the address field in the Opera browsers? Well, the star lets you easily add bookmarks or new Speed Dial shortcuts for easy access to your most used websites. Speed Dial is the super-handy way of reaching your most-used websites, through nine thumbnail icons greeting you as soon as you start the browser. Time saved, hassle saved.

The little differences

So, what’s the difference between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile? Glad you asked! With Opera Mini, the cost-saving compression is always turned on. There are computers located in cool locations such as Iceland that squeeze the webpages down before sending them in smaller (and thereby cheaper) packages to your phone. This also enables less-capable feature phones to view full webpages, where the built-in browser can’t. Opera Mobile has cost-saving features too, but here you can turn them on and off, making the browser more like the Opera Turbo feature in your Opera desktop browser.

The Opera Mini 6.5 browser is now available in the Apple App Store, Android Market and for download at m.opera.com for Symbian S60, Java-enabled phones and BlackBerry phones.

The Opera Mobile browser is available at the Android Market and at m.opera.com for Symbian S60 phones.

Focus on Europe

Each month, the State of the Mobile Web report has a closer look at one out of six regions for a traffic analysis. This month, we focus on Europe. The top 10 countries using the Opera Mini browser in this region are the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Serbia, France, Hungary and Czech Republic. Note: High-ranking countries such as Belarus and Russia are counted under CIS, not Europe.

For September, Hungary and Romania led the growth race for the greatest number of Opera Mini users, while Hungary and Serbia showed the most page-view growth. For the most data-hungry countries, Hungary and Spain topped the list, meaning they viewed the most data-intensive pages, e.g., sites with lots of pictures.

During September, Opera Mini users accessed 11.6 petabytes of uncompressed data — that’s six times more than the total storage capacity of the human brain (or, one ninth of the android robot Data in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, according to statistics search engine Wolfram Alpha).

Vodafone Turkey released a co-branded version of the Opera Mini mobile browser to add a little spice to the mobile web experience for its subscribers. This partnership has its roots in the midsummer of 2011 when Vodafone Group Services and Opera Software signed an extended global frame agreement.

More than 16.8 million Vodafone customers in Turkey will now get instant access to their favorite websites, as well as Vodafone’s popular services. Sport results, social networking, an information portal and a content store are now just one click away from the Speed Dial panel in Opera Mini. The browser is completely free and available for every Vodafone Turkey user at m.opera.com.

Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile browser, thanks to the unique technology that compresses web data by up to 90%. That’s why web surfing is so much faster with Opera Mini, especially on EDGE or 3G and even on crowded Wi-Fi, no matter which phone model is used. Opera Mini also helps to download more webpages per megabyte; this is extremely important when you are on pay-per-data service or when data roaming is active.

“Opera Mini has already won the hearts of almost 130 million users worldwide,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “We aim to make web surfing even easier for Vodafone’s subscribers in Turkey, enabling them to leap on their favorite web resources in a snap.”

According to Vodafone Turkey, the move formed part of the company’s unwavering focus on bringing the latest telecommunication technologies and most innovative services to customers: “We aim to ensure that everyone in Turkey can enjoy the mobile Internet as part of the Super Internet strategy that we launched at the beginning of 2011. We are delighted to offer this new version of Opera Mini to our customers, making it even easier and more enjoyable for them to surf the Mobile Internet”.

Turkey is one of the biggest and fastest growing regions for Opera Mini usage. According to the last State of Mobile Web report, there are now 3.5 times as many Opera Mini users in Turkey as one year ago, and seven times as many page views. Norway's Opera Software ASA today announced new versions of its browser - Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 for the platform Android, which now show the actual amount received and transmitted data, as well as the amount saved in whole or in traffic during the last session.

This information can be accessed through the point of Help menu in the browser, for example, to estimate the amount of traffic consumed while roaming for a business trip or vacation.

As the developers say, from a technical point of view of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile have become more integrated with the operating system Android. New tool move bookmarks from a "native" browser in your phone Opera Mini and Opera Mobile makes their use more comfortable. In addition, the icons for quick access to favorite sites can be migrated to the homepage of the phone in the future they will automatically open in mobile browser Opera.

Other improvements Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5:

Advanced technology Opera Turbo in Opera Mobile
Native video playback for OS Honeycomb
Updated kernel Opera Presto, high performance networks, improved support for HTML5 and memory usage slider JavaScript.

A megabyte saved is a megabyte earned. Now, the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers for Android make it easier than ever to keep control of surfing costs.

Debuting on Android phones, Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 will now show you exactly how much data you have spent and saved using the two products and, in turn, the money and time you save. A dedicated page, easily accessible from the help menu inside the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers, keeps count of how much data you are spending and saving in total, or for a specific timeframe like a trip abroad with roaming.

The number of megabytes saved while using the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers can directly translate into money saved if you are roaming or on a pay-as-you-go plan for data traffic. For people on capped data plans, this is a handy feature to make sure you don’t max out reaching those slow, punishing network speeds you might encounter after using up your allowance.

A browser in the cloud

Using cloud-assisted browsing to reduce the size of webpages by up to 90%, consumers get a faster, cheaper and better web experience. With no special device needed, Opera Mini works on more than 3000 devices and is a free download from m.opera.com.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much money they can save on data traffic, people naturally want an easy way to measure how much data they use,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Now, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile will show exactly how much data you save by using our cloud-assisted technology. Never before has it been this easy — or this sexy — to reduce your mobile data usage.”

An easy (book)mark

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers are becoming more tightly integrated into the Android operating system. With a handy bookmark import function and shortcuts directly from the home screens, everyday use of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile is even easier.

Bookmark import will transfer existing bookmarks on the device to the Opera browsers, while the home screen shortcut makes for easier access to your most-used websites.

Other improvements, some more visible than others, include:

Updated Opera Turbo in Opera Mobile allows you to take advantage of data savings with Opera Turbo, when surfing on mobile networks
Inline video on Honeycomb for Opera Mobile is now supported
Several “under the hood” improvements including a fresh update to the Opera Presto rendering engine, improved network performance, HTML5 micro data and smaller JavaScript engine memory usage
Opera Mini and Opera Mobile for Android are available for free in the Android Market or from m.opera.com.
