Samsung Electronics has released a new line of smartphone Duos, which supports just two SIM-cards. However, while the model is only available in China - it went on sale without fanfare, but it is possible that it is after some time and gets to the other markets. Earlier this week, Google and Mozilla said they had struck a deal to renew their search royalty agreement for another three years.
What the pair declined to add: The search giant will pay just under $300 million per year to be the default choice in Mozilla’s Firefox browser, a huge jump from its previous arrangement, due to competing interest from both Yahoo and Microsoft.
Sources said this total amount — just under $1 billion — was the minimum revenue guarantee for delivering search queries garnered from consumers using Firefox.
Google’s main rival in the bid, sources said, was Microsoft’s Bing search service, which was aggressively trying to hip-check it from the main search spot on the browser.
That’s because the software giant has been spending a lot of money in efforts to grow Bing’s market share in the search market.
Microsoft, of course, also owns the still-dominant Internet Explorer browser, but Google’s Chrome has recently been making major gains over both IE and Mozilla’s Firefox.
Still, Mozilla’s recent negotiations with both companies was about search market share.
Yahoo was also in the mix, even though Microsoft powers its search technology, because a hookup with Firefox was considered a plus in holding on to its declining search market share.
But the deal, which was being pushed hard by Yahoo’s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving and its search head Shashi Seth, was determined to be too costly for Yahoo.
Costly indeed, since the new price is much higher than Google had previously ponied up to Mozilla. In 2010, Google contributed 84 percent of Mozilla’s $123 million in revenue.
A previous version of the partnership had expired at the end of November, and the new talks were done against a backdrop of simmering tension between Google and Mozilla over Chrome.
As Liz Gannes wrote earlier this week:
Since the first search royalty deal was signed in 2008, Google’s own Chrome browser has become a significant competitor. Just last month, Chrome overtook Firefox in global usage for the first time, according to StatCounter. Both browsers — software which is used to navigate the Internet — have about 25 percent market share.
Even with the new default deal with Google, Mozilla still also has partnerships with other search providers, including Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon and eBay.
Of course, everybody declined to comment on my queries to hand over all the financial deets stat.
But Google’s SVP of Search, Alan Eustace, said in a statement: “Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come.”
Great, perhaps, but also much more expensive — so presumably Firefox is worth it.

After the company released a list of Samsung phones and tablets, which will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Among other things, the greatest surprise was the fact that although such an update will be released for the smartphone Google Nexus S, its closest analogue Samsung Galaxy S will not be updated. Also not to be Ice Cream Sandwich and Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0. Now, however, received an explanation as to why these devices will not work with the latest operating system, Google. The problem is that during the development of Samsung Galaxy S and Tab 7.0 has been developed for them based on the original firmware version of the standard operating system Android. The changes made by engineers, were deeper than usual: special widgets work with video calls, etc. In addition, each individual market, these models receive additional software and hardware features that depend on the sales region, and operators. For example, in Brazil's equipment includes ISDB-Tb-in TV tuner. These additions and changes can not be adapted to work correctly in not the most productive equipment. Officially. Unofficially, there is firmware that provide Android 4.0 ICS on these devices.

poisike, _motley and myself began working on porting ICS to our tab's separately over the weekend, poisike using a xoom rom, myself a asop build out of the CM9 git repo.

Both poisike and I both initially had trouble with the touch screen driver, motley modified his kernel and now it works!.

This is very early, each of our ports have things working that the other may not. So we won't be posting any links until we combine them, but I do pledge to share as soon as we can.

What works:

Update will adjust wireless signal strength indicator

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone is going to get a software update that will adjust the device's signal strength indicator, Verizon Wireless confirmed on Wednesday, less than a week after the new Android 4.0 phone began shipping.

Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney didn't say when the update would arrive. Some Verizon service reps have reportedly told customers that an update related to signal strength will come in January.

In an email, Raney stressed that "there is no issue with the performance of the device." Some users have theorized that the signal issue could be related to above-normal battery drain.

Many new Galaxy Nexus customers and Computerworld blogger JR Raphael have reported problems related to inconsistent signal strength over Verizon's LTE network since the U.S. version began shipping on Dec. 15.

Raney said the Galaxy Nexus software update "will adjust the signal strength indicator to more closely match other Verizon Wireless devices." She said the Galaxy Nexus translates the wireless signal into bars differently than other smartphones.

A review copy of the Galaxy Nexus provided by Verizon to a reporter showed a variety of inconsistent signals in a Los Angeles neighborhood, switching from two bars' worth of 4G LTE service to no bars and then to 3G service. The phone would offer 4G voice connections with no bars, but it couldn't hold a data connection for the music service Pandora over LTE -- it switched to 3G with several minutes of buffering to permit Pandora music to play.

Analysts have noted that some of the issues with signal strength could be related to how well the LTE network is rolled out in a given locale. Verizon says 179 cities have LTE service, but within a particular city, some areas might have more LTE towers than others.

Last week we made an Ice Cream Sandwich alpha ROM available for unlocked Xperia™ phones. The response we got was overwhelming, and we want to say a big thank you for all your great feedback and the huge interest shown! We will look through all the comments we received in the survey, on the blog post and on the video, and incorporate the input into our planning of future software and product releases. We have now also made the open source archive for the Ice Cream Sandwich alpha ROM available. In addition, the sensor HAL will also be available as open source soon.
Even though we were expecting some reactions on the Ice Cream Sandwich alpha ROM release, we did not expect such an amount of great and constructive feedback. Some of the things we have received comments on are actually already planned for coming releases (keep in mind this was only an alpha). Other things will be up for consideration and prioritisation, based on parameters such as relevance, usability, workload, resources and timing.
At this point, it’s too early to go into details about what will be included or not in future software releases, but we can share some information about the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich software release:
We’re looking into making it possible to create groups in the list of contacts.
We’re planning to ship both the Ice Cream Sandwich vanilla gallery app and our own Sony Ericsson gallery app. They both include some great features, so it will be up to you to use the one which fits your needs best.
It is our intention to include the popular swipe to write feature, currently available in our Gingerbread software.
Open source archive available now
As the headline says, we have made the open source archive for the Ice Cream Sandwich alpha ROM available. Moreover, we will also publish the sensor HAL as open source. This means you will be able to get access to sensors such as the proximity sensor, the compass and so on, through the lower software layers. This file will also be published in our open source archive.
Keep up all the good work devs!

The company refused to block the Amazon app store Android Market on tablets Amazon Kindle Fire. Starting with software upgrades to ensure version 6.2.1, released on Wednesday, users can easily view attachments and other content of this service. Previously, when trying to log app store Android Market browser to automatically switch to load the app store AppStore from the company Amazon. But download applications from the Android Market for Amazon Kindle Fire is still impossible. Especially one this function does not block, but if you change the base operating system from Google to Amazon completely eliminated the "profitable level," resulting in direct association with the Android Market user account Google has become impossible. So now at Amazon nominally and does not limit the user to access all content they desired global network, but to use an open and free access to the app store for Windows installed in the tablet Amazon, is impossible.
