First Lenovo ThinkPad tablet featuring Ericsson’s embedded HSPA Evolution mobile broadband module

Offers download speeds of up to 21Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.8Mbps

Lenovo’s first business-focused Android ThinkPad tablet meets users’ demands for cloud services and anywhere, anytime connectivity

Lenovo’s Android-based ThinkPad Tablet – featuring Ericsson’s (NASDAQ: ERIC) F5521gw embedded HSPA Evolution mobile broadband module – offers users the fastest mobile broadband experience available for devices of this type. With download speeds of up to 21Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.8Mbps, even a few spare minutes can be put to good use. This means that the days when waiting time equated to wasting time will soon be just a distant memory. Business people can now be productive while being at the airport thanks to the launch of an ultra-portable product that provides a mobile connection to the Internet, company business systems and e-mail accounts. And consumers can use any spare time they have to chat or quickly login to social network sites.

"Our ThinkPad Tablet gives mobile professionals the first real business-focused tablet that keeps them productive while protecting their data and managing their device," says Tom Butler, director, Worldwide ThinkPad Marketing, Lenovo. "We have incorporated Ericsson’s F5521gw module into our 3G model to give the users an incredibly fast mobile broadband connection along with other benefits, like cost-effectiveness, low power consumption and long battery life."

With consumers keen to stay constantly connected and the availability of open source operating systems such as Android, cloud services are not only here to stay but are also encouraging people to connect more and more devices, such as laptops, e-book readers, media players and tablets. The market for tablets is expected to grow rapidly over the coming years and it is likely that the majority of those tablets will incorporate an embedded mobile broadband module.

Mats Norin, Vice President, Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules, says: "We see a clear trend suggesting that devices will soon be considered useless if they cannot be connected. Research carried out by Ericsson ConsumerLab shows that, regardless of the device they are using, people are increasingly discovering how difficult life is when they are not continuously connected to the cloud. Therefore, we foresee long-term growth for embedded connectivity in mass-market notebooks, netbooks, tablets and other consumer electronics."

Lenovo has been using Ericsson’s HSPA modules for models of its ThinkPad laptops since 2008. Now, thanks to the F5521gw module, launched in September 2010, Lenovo will launch its 3G ThinkPad Tablet with the market’s fastest mobile broadband connection. The 3G model of the ThinkPad Tablet will be available in 4Q 2011.

The module is the size of a PCI Express Mini Card, which is a standardized form factor in the PC industry. It will also be available in a smaller, thinner format, as well as a half-size version of a PCI Express Mini Card in October this year. These versions will fit inside smaller devices, such as media players and personal navigation devices. All three versions of the module are based on ST-Ericsson-proven Thor 21Mbps thin modems, which work on both WCDMA/HSPA and GSM/EDGE networks.

First high-power density solution based on digitally controlled DC-DC converters

Quarter-brick format converter combines two Ericsson BMR453 series power modules to deliver exceptional power density and tightly controlled output voltages

New Ericsson BMR453-0108/014 ideal for use in networking and data storage equipment

Ericsson has introduced a new ultra-high-power-density DC-DC converter that can make a significant contribution to energy saving in data centers. The exceptional ability of this new small-footprint converter to handle high power and deliver tightly controlled output-voltages makes it ideal for use in networking and data storage equipment.

Available in an industry-standard quarter-brick footprint, the new module, BMR453-0108/014, provides an output voltage of 12.45V with an output current of 60A, delivering a total output power of 711W. The BMR453-0108/014 combines two Ericsson BMR453 series power modules, assembled in parallel and offers a power density as high as 33.38W/cm2 (215W/in2) while it embeds digital core controllers. Due to its built-in energy optimization capabilities, the BMR453-0108/014 delivers 96.9% efficiency at half load and up to 95.8% at full load.

"Not only are there are very few products available on the market that can to deliver this level of power handling in a quarter-brick format, the new Ericsson BMR453-0108/014 is also the first high-power-density solution based on digitally controlled DC-DC converters," said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director of Ericsson Power Modules.

Based on the BMR453 platform, the BMR453-0108/014 is the ideal product for powering networking applications such as network processing encryption, load balancing and managing data-center traffic, in addition to powering arrays of disk drives, which require a stable voltage to guarantee data integrity. The new product is also ideal for use in production and test systems, such as those used in the semiconductor industry.

Smart Services Routers (SSR) support delivery of services across fixed and mobile networks; enable faster introduction of new services to consumers

Features unparalleled scaling of signaling and data capacity combined with leading density

Superior system-wide quality of service enforcement enables operators to offer differentiated services to consumers

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announces the market introduction of its SSR 8000 family of Smart Services Routers (SSR), a key component of Ericsson's 4th generation of IP networking launched earlier this year. The solution provides operators with a simple, smart and scalable solution for converged networks. As a consolidated platform for both fixed and mobile network applications, the SSR enables complete network convergence so subscribers can access services from any device or location.

When more and more different types of data-driven devices are connected to networks, operators will need to handle unprecedented amounts of traffic and be prepared to cope with an unparalleled diversity of applications and end-user devices. The 4th generation of IP networks must enable users to access the Internet anywhere at anytime, while delivering personalized services.

The SSR 8000 product portfolio is developed in Ericsson Silicon Valley and runs the Ericsson IP Operating System, a highly resilient, modular operating system that has been deployed in 75 of the top 100 operators networks in the world. Carriers benefit from the SSR's low carbon footprint, superior system efficiency, superior QoE, and highly scalable architecture. The SSR 8020 is a 16Tbps system with 400G full-duplex slots combined with leading density (e.g. up to 800x1G or 200x10G ports).

"Operators have been transforming their networks to IP for several years now, but requirements have grown, driving the need for a new round of equipment that can support new applications and revenue generation of fixed and mobile broadband segments, characterized by not only video traffic, but high call signaling volumes," stated Michael Howard, principal analyst, carrier and data center networks, at Infonetics Research. "The new Ericsson Smart Services Routers are designed to provide the scalability, resiliency, and subscriber/application support that carriers are seeking for their next generation networks."

"To enable a truly Networked Society, operators must effectively manage an ever-increasing traffic volume and a diverse pool of applications and end-user devices. The network must not only be able to handle a tremendous volume of data, it must also address an unprecedented level of signaling traffic," said Jan Häglund, Head of Product Area IP & Broadband, Ericsson. "Our Smart Services Routers serve as the foundation for a highly reliable network unhampered by technological constraints. The SSR 8000 family can scale to meet the signaling and bandwidth needs of even the most demanding applications, and help operators establish a competitive advantage in the race to connect 50 billion devices by 2020."

The Android 2.3.4 phone features an 1.4GHz processor and will be available with the Xperia Facebook Inside Update. We show you all the details that come with that software update - on the Xperia arc S as well as in October with all 2011 Xperia phones.

Xperia™ arc is my current favourite phone and it has almost been glued to my hand for six months now. Apparently I’m not the only one finding it attractive. Xperia™ arc was awarded with EISA award for best European camera phone back in August and has also won the prestigious red dot product design award. Today, in conjunction to the big IFA fair in Berlin, we are proud to present the new Xperia™ arc S – the fastest and most entertaining Xperia™ phone to date.

Xperia™ arc S comes with a 1.4 Ghz processor compared to 1 Ghz in Xperia arc. It also contains the new photo feature 3D Sweep Panorama presented last week . I’ve tried it out and it’s surprisingly cool! It’s easy to use to. You simply sweep the camera across the objects you want to capture and while you do it you’re guided in the phones camera interface. During the sweep movement the camera will take lots of pictures and then recompute them into a 3D picture. To view the picture in 3D you connect Xperia™ arc S to a 3D TV through the HDMI connector. We’ll try to provide you with a demo on how it works here soon, although in 2D:-)

Xperia™ arc S also comes with Facebook inside Xperia™ 2.0 out of the box. The most important updates from the current version of Facebook inside Xperia™ are that you’ll now be able share games and apps through Facebook, like music from FM radio and see the latest images uploaded by your friends in your phones gallery.

At the same stage in Berlin, Sony also just presented Sony Entertainment Network – a portal to entertainment services including music and movies from the major labels and studios and many independent ones to. Sony Entertainment Network will work across many different devices and for Sony Ericsson consumers (in the markets where the service is available) this means that you’ll get access to a catalogue of over 10 million music tracks from the cloud based subscription Music Unlimited service and all the latest movie releases from the on-demand Video Unlimited service in your Xperia™ phone.

Are you longing for some high-tech companionship to make you feel better? Why not get with our hot, new smartphone – the Xperia™ arc S. The new Xperia™ arc S has a powerful 1.4 Ghz processor delivering up to 25% faster entertainment compared to Xperia arc™. Xperia™ arc S is also the winner of the EISA award “European Camera Phone 2011-2012”*, it comes with Android™ 2.3, and it is packed with all of Sony’s multimedia technology.

Xperia™ arc S truly takes mobile technology to the next level, bringing the award-winning sleek design from Xperia arc* and adding an upgraded 1.4Ghz processor, which means a 25% faster camera start up and media conversion time, along with 20% faster web page rendering time compared to Xperia™ arc**. It’s time to take your mobile web browser to the next level. Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the leading wireless services provider in the Philippines, and Opera Software, the developer of the world’s most popular mobile web browser, recently renewed and extended their cooperation. The two companies are devoted to bringing the best Internet experience to Smart subscribers with an improved Smart-Opera Mini browser.

With more than 121 million users worldwide, the Opera Mini mobile web browser has built a reputation for its convenient compression technology, which decreases the size of webpages by up to 90 percent before sending them to the phone. It results in significantly faster page loading and lowers data costs when users access the Web on a mobile network. From basic feature phones to high-end smartphones and tablets, more than 3,000 mobile device models in the Philippines will benefit from this enhanced surfing experience.

The lowered data size also makes Opera Mini a perfect partner to Smart’s volume-based ALWAYS ON packages. ALWAYS ON lets Smart mobile users stay connected to the Web at a more affordable rate based on the amount of data they wish to consume.

ALWAYS ON packages are available from P20 for 25MB of data (valid for one day) to P995 for 2GB of data (valid for 30 days). To activate a package, simply send “ON” and the amount of the package you would like 2200, e.g., (ON[space]20 send to 2200).

The Smart-Opera Mini browser further levels up the user experience with improved page scrolling, an intuitive user interface and added functionalities, such as pinch-to-zoom on supported devices and a share button for sharing to popular social networks.

Smart is renowned for its innovation in bringing world-class wireless data services. The company first introduced the Smart-Opera Mini browser in early 2010. The number of users of this co-branded browser has grown on average by 44.8 percent each month since its launch. This means more and more Filipinos are accessing the Web through their mobile phones with a better and more affordable browsing experience.

Smart — which has made the mobile Internet a cornerstone of its “Internet for All” objective — the Opera Mini browser will help make the World Wide Web even more accessible to a broader base of its subscribers, particularly to those who use feature phones.

“While our network and system are ready to provide data services, the challenge lies in the devices through which our subscribers access the Internet,” said Orlando Vea, Co-founder and Chief Wireless Advisor of Smart. “Opera Mini on a Smart cellphone can help introduce the mobile Internet experience to our subscribers, as it allows the Web to ‘fit’ perfectly and comfortably into any cellphone.”

LG’s HX906TX Combines 9.1 speakers with State-of-the-Art

Upright 3D Speakers to Create World's First 3D Sound Home Theatre System

LG Electronics (LG) will be thrilling IFA 2011 with the HX906TX, its all-new CINEMA 3D Sound HTS whose 9.1 speaker system creates the closest thing to the audio power of movie theatres or live concerts. Thanks to its innovative new sound configuration, the HX906TX delivers truly 360-degree sound that envelopes viewers in audio –- both horizontally and vertically -– like never before.

“LG is pioneering the field of 3D sound with the 9.1 speaker system on the HX906TX,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Along with our groundbreaking CINEMA

3D TV, the HX906TX sets new standards in immersive entertainment, with a sound so rich and textured, it’s hard to believe it’s not real.”

The key feature in creating the HX906TX’s sound is its 9.1 speaker system, which adds four Upright 3D Speakers to the conventional 5.1 channels on a home theatre system. With 10 speakers in total delivering an optimized, multi-directional audio, the HX906TX creates an immersive sound that is also powerful enough to capture the delicate background sounds of everyday life.

By sitting on top of the Tallboy speaker units, the Upright 3D Speakers further enrich the audio by pumping sound upward, ensuring that the vertical space is completely filled with sound. In addition, a 360-degree Reflector inside each of the Upright 3D Speakers reflects sound in all directions, creating acoustics as rich as those in a concert hall.

By applying LG’s unique 3D effect DSP algorithm, Sound Field Expansion technology further expands the horizontal sound field, and works in harmony with the Upright 3D Speakers to create a truly immersive, 360-degree sound experience. Sound Field Expansion extends the audio “sweet spot” so viewers always feel as if they are right in the middle of the sound, even when they’re gathered together in larger groups. Moreover, the 3D Sound Analyzer analyzes complex layers of original sound, adding sound information to any empty space. The result is more detailed and realistic 3D Sound audio.

Among its array of other top-notch features, the HX906TX boasts 3D Blu-ray™ Playback that delivers stunning 3D images in full, 1,080p HD. Producing clear 3D images with 12-bit, 4,096-step gradation, the HX906TX’s 3D Blu-ray™ Playback is the perfect visual accompaniment to its immersive sound.

The HX906TX’s cubic, slim-line design combines a metallic silver hairline with a glossy texture to create a unit that complements any living room or lounge.

For the best in entertainment options, the HX906TX comes with LG’s outstanding Smart TV functions. Premium Content provides a wide array of VOD services for the whole family, while LG Apps deliver top quality lifestyle, educational and interactive applications tailor-made for TVs. And users only need to download an app to turn their Android or iPhone smartphone into a comprehensive remote control for the HX906TX.

Ensuring viewers will never be short of things to listen to or watch, the HX906TX’s Wi-Fi Direct™ enables simple file sharing without the need for a wireless hotspot. The HX906TX can also access and share any content on DLNA-certified digital devices -– such as mobile phones, tablets and PCs – while the single HDMI connection means viewers can send or receive top-quality audio data via a single HDMI cable. In addition, multi-playback lets the HX906TX support a wide range of media formats, including MKV and DivX HD.

Further ramping up the convenience and fun, Music ID by Gracenote provides simultaneous information -– including artist, song and album titles –- on whatever the user is listening to. And an iPhone/iPod cradle lets users enjoy their own personal music libraries via the HX906TX’s rich digital sound.

To see more of LG’s Home Entertainment offerings at IFA, take a “LG 3D World Booth Tour” on HE Media Day on September 1 at 15:00 or 16:00 in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.

HTC has a high-end Android handset on the way codenamed Runnymede; we first heard of this device a few weeks ago when it showed up in some EXIF data on a photo sharing site. Now we've received the full rundown on the features and specifications of Runnymede, which will be among the first phones to emerge from the collaboration between HTC and Beats Audio:

- Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread

- 4.7-inch, 480x800 display

- 1.5GHz single-core MSM8255 (same CPU as Flyer)

- 768MB of RAM / 16GB of storage

- Eight-megapixel / 720p rear-camera with dual flashes & 1.3-megapixel front-facing webcam

- under 10 millimeters thick

- Sense 3.5

- DLNA

- Bundled Beats headphones (not earphones)

While on the surface the specs here aren't cutting edge -- screen resolution, processor speed, RAM, and video capture are all bested by other handsets on the market -- it's the details that make Runnymede sound like a winner. The camera, for instance, is said to feature a backlit sensor plus 28mm wide-angle lens and focal ratio of f/2.2 (compared to the iPhone 4's smaller f/2.8); in video mode, it can supposedly capture footage at 60 frames-per-second, more than twice that of the average handset. Obviously sound quality will also play a big role here, with Runnymede featuring SRS Surround, dual microphones, and even recognizing when it's plugged into the Beats headphones.

Apparently Runnymede will ship in time for the holidays, although carrier adoption is still a mystery. Assuming Eternity launches in the same timeframe, both Android and Windows Phone fans will have a 4.7-inch HTC handset to choose from before the end of the year.
