Saudi Telecom Company (STC) teams with Nokia Siemens Networks to ensure network availability and up to 42 Mbps mobile broadband

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has once again successfully handled the upsurge in mobile traffic during the holy Hajj pilgrimage, which in the western calendar took place this year between 3 to 9 November. Nokia Siemens Networks, STC’s preferred mobile equipment and services supplier, ensured connectivity for thousands of STC subscribers and millions of pilgrims. There was an average increase of 500%, and a peak increase of 760%, in STC’s 3G traffic during the pilgrimage. Despite this huge increase in traffic and capacity load, network performance remained high, providing an optimal service for pilgrims. Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole GSM and 3G radio supplier for STC’s network in Mecca, Medina, and other pilgrim areas, and has been providing Hajj service support for over a decade.

The Hajj is a week-long pilgrimage when millions of visitors move through Masha'er; from Mina to Muzdalifah along to Arafat, an area of 15 square kilometers. Nokia Siemens Networks’ association with the Hajj pilgrimage dates back to the year 2001, when it built STC’s network in Mecca to accommodate the heavy traffic during Ramadan*. This year, the peak hour traffic reached one million erlangs** on the day of Eid on November 6.

“Nokia Siemens Networks has once again stepped up to the task, giving us the necessary support to handle high density traffic during the Hajj,” said Bandar Algafari, vice president, Networks Sector at STC. “The challenge this year was to handle the dramatic increase in data traffic driven by an increased uptake in the use of smartphones. Pilgrims were sharing their experiences by taking pictures, uploading those to social networking sites, sending MMSs and surfing the internet. We are happy to have served all our subscribers and roaming visitors, thanks to Nokia Siemens Networks’ extensive support services and expertise in handling events of this size.”

“We understand the importance of the Hajj and what it means to pilgrims coming from across the world,” added Teo Tuomas Hirvonen, head of STC business at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Coping with high-density traffic in such a confined space requires robust equipment and reliable performance. It was thus absolutely essential for us to make sure that services work smoothly during this critical period, and subscribers are able to connect with friends and family both back home and on the pilgrimage.”

Nokia Siemens Networks deployed HSPA+ to deliver speeds of up to 42 megabits per second (Mbps). To meet the increased demand for network capacity and avoid any degradation in network performance during exceptional traffic and load conditions, the vendor provided its Special Event Support services***. This involves comprehensive managed services, including network design planning, and optimization services, as well as full care and field support for the network. This allowed STC to offer subscribers improved data services such as live video calls. Nokia Siemens Networks also took complete responsibility of supply, installation, integration and commissioning of equipment.

In the future, operators can further improve the management of unpredictable broadband traffic by evolving to Liquid Net****. This radical new approach from Nokia Siemens Networks unleashes frozen network capacity and efficiently allocates resources to fulfill unpredictable demand, wherever and whenever people use broadband. This will allow operators to be even better prepared for events such as the Hajj pilgrimage, or new services introduced in the internet without knowing release dates and the impact it can have on their network.

Two weeks ago UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) hosted a SAICM*-meeting in the historic city of Belgrade, Serbia. SAICM stands for Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management and is part of UNEP. The meeting was held in preparation for next year’s International Conference of Chemicals Management (ICCM-3) which will address toxic substances.
Recognized by UNEP for our tools to control and track substances and materials in all products, Sony Ericsson was invited to speak at the side event. The aim of our presentation was to share our experiences working with chemicals in products in our industry. It addressed how we work with our suppliers and the communication channels we use with them.
It was very exciting for us to be able to present and participate in the SAICM side event (way more exciting than the picture shows). Our hope is that by participating in these sorts of events we can inspire people not only in the industry sector but other stakeholders as well to work more actively with keeping the chemicals in check and phasing out critical substances.

*SAICM was developed by a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral Preparatory Committee. It supports the achievement of the goal agreed at the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development of ensuring that, by the year 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health.

Unboxing the Nokia Lumia 800

We’ve received some questions regarding support for Adobe Flash Player 11.1 and AIR 3.1 on the Galaxy Nexus. To be clear, the Galaxy Nexus does not initially support Adobe Flash Player 11.1 and AIR 3.1. As we previously communicated in a blog post, devices and software updates from our partners which introduce new technologies are being developed on varied schedules that are different from our own, which means that the Adobe runtimes may not always be optimized or supported on devices until a subsequent release. We will provide a minor update to the runtimes to support the Galaxy Nexus in December.

In our round-up of sales figures for the Nokia Lumia 800, the observant of you out of there will have noted that Nokia’s big Windows Phone debut has yet to arrive on O2. So anyone waiting for the phone formerly known as the Sea Ray on O2 wouldn't have been counted among the early adopters of the Lumia 800.

A glance over at O2's Coming Soon page tells us that it’s launching in December - which begins tomorrow. With this in mind we had a quick chat with our source at O2, who told us that the Nokia Lumia 800 will be going on sale “next Friday the 9th of December.”

Sadly, there's no information about pricing, just confirmation of the date.

Not having the HTC Titan on offer, the main rival for the Windows Phone crown, it’s hard for us to make an educated guess as to pricing.

Data will presumably be offered on the same basis as it is on other O2 smartphone contracts; i.e. £3 for 100MB, £6 for 500MB and £10 for 1GB on top of however much you’re paying for the minutes and messages.

Some kind of official announcement on this will no doubt roll out between now and next Friday - we’ll keep you posted.

"Rostelecom" launched an ambitious program consolidation and rebranding of its mobile assets, which implies, in particular, the transition to a single federal portfolio of products and tariffs (from a regional perspective), as well as to promote the use of a single brand and single creative platform. In the first stage - until mid-2012 - "Rostelecom" will perform their brand communication in the mode of mobile assets co-branding: regional brands such as Utel, «Nizhny Novgorod Cellular Communications" (NSS), "Eniseytelecom" (UCC), "Baikalwestcom" (BCI) , Elaine GSM and others will be used in conjunction with a brand new combined company. In the second stage - in the second half of 2012 - is planned to abandon the use of regional brands and completely switch to a single brand "Rostelecom". In September, "Rostelecom" introduced a new brand of the combined company. Using a common creative platform enables mobile users to "Rostelecom", arriving in a different region to see a recognizable brand, products, services and offers its operator. To promote the services of "Rostelecom", including mobile services, the agency created to be used TLC (Leo Burnett Group) image of the family Knopkinyh. Her name she was due to the fact that the use of various telecommunications services is inextricably linked with the buttons - real (on regular phone or a computer keyboard) or virtual (as in the device's screen). And when promoting mobile services Knopkiny will figure even in the name of the federal tariff plans. For example, the tariff plan "Family Knopkinyh" provides favorable conditions for calls within the network. A tariff plan "Knopkiny communicate" offers the same low price for all local calls. In the future there will be other "family" products "Knopkiny travel" (roaming), "Knopkiny dot ru" (mobile Internet), "Knopkiny without Borders" (unlimited supply). Today "Rostelecom" and its subsidiaries serve more than 12 5 million cellular subscribers in the standard GSM-900/1800. In 2011, "Rostelecom" focusing efforts on building a unified system of management of mobile assets. The Corporate Center was established Directorate management and development of mobile assets, which at the beginning of the year led Vladislav Shvaybovich. Directorate as a single point of accountability coordinates all issues on management of mobile assets, including subsidiaries and affiliates which are engaged in the provision of cellular services.

Researcher says seeing is believing

An Android app developer has published what he says is conclusive proof that millions of smartphones are secretly monitoring the key presses, geographic locations, and received messages of its users.

In a YouTube video posted on Monday, Trevor Eckhart showed how software from a Silicon Valley company known as Carrier IQ recorded in real time the keys he pressed into a stock EVO handset, which he had reset to factory settings just prior to the demonstration. Using a packet sniffer while his device was in airplane mode, he demonstrated how each numeric tap and every received text message is logged by the software.

Ironically, he says, the Carrier IQ software recorded the “hello world” dispatch even before it was displayed on his handset.

Eckhart then connected the device to a Wi-Fi network and pointed his browser at Google. Even though he denied the search giant's request that he share his physical location, the Carrier IQ software recorded it. The secret app then recorded the precise input of his search query – again, “hello world” – even though he typed it into a page that uses the SSL, or secure sockets layer, protocol to encrypt data sent between the device and the servers.

“We can see that Carrier IQ is querying these strings over my wireless network [with] no 3G connectivity and it is reading HTTPS,” the 25-year-old Eckhart says.

The video was posted four days after Carrier IQ withdrew legal threats against Eckhart for calling its software a “rootkit.” The Connecticut-based programmer said the characterization is accurate because the software is designed to obscure its presence by bypassing typical operating-system functions.

In an interview last week, Carrier IQ VP of Marketing Andrew Coward rejected claims the software posed a privacy threat because it never captured key presses.

“Our technology is not real time,” he said at the time. "It's not constantly reporting back. It's gathering information up and is usually transmitted in small doses.”

Coward went on to say that Carrier IQ was a diagnostic tool designed to give network carriers and device manufacturers detailed information about the causes of dropped calls and other performance issues.

Eckhart said he chose the HTC phone purely for demonstration purposes. Blackberrys, other Android-powered handsets, and smartphones from Nokia contain the same snooping software, he claims.

The 17-minute video concluded with questions, including: “Why does SMSNotify get called and show to be dispatching text messages to [Carrier IQ]?” and “Why is my browser data being read, especially HTTPS on my Wi-Fi?”

The Register has put the same questions to Carrier IQ, and will update this post if the company responds.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Olive is the first full length feature film shot completely on a smart phone. A 35 mm lens adapter was fabricated to fit the smart phone in order to achieve a shallow depth of field. The film stars two time Academy Award nominated actress Gena Rowlands (the Notebook, A Woman Under the Influence, Gloria). The film simply put is about a little girl that goes into the lives of three people — an old lonely woman, a foreigner having a hard time acclimating in the United States, and an obese man — and transforms their lives without saying one word!

The financing of Olive was done independently of any corporation. The goal now is to be the first film to not only be shot on a cell phone but to also be the first independently financed feature film on 2,000+ theaters across the United States without the backing of a Major Studio.

The Film also stars John Scurti, Chris Maher, and Ruby Alexander. Other names affiliated with the project include Ben Lear, Randi Zuckerberg, and Skywalker Sound did the sound design.

The Samsung Electronics 'Exynos 5250' release of the sample and mass production plans for the second quarter of next year.

Vice President of System LSI Division, Samsung Electronics yidojun the "Cortex-A15 with dramatically improved the processing power of next-generation mobile AP core," said "Samsung Exynos 5250 users with low power and high performance of the mobile environment to provide a new level," he said.

Samsung Electronics Co is set to resume selling its Galaxy tablet computer in Australia as early as Friday, after the South Korean technology firm won a rare legal victory in a long-running global patent war with Apple Inc.

An Australian federal court unanimously decided to lift a preliminary injunction, imposed by a lower court, on sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- but granted Apple a stay on lifting the sales ban until Friday afternoon.

"It's hard to expect the ruling to have a major positive impact on Samsung's tablet business or legal cases in other countries as Apple could appeal ... and sales won't be restored anytime soon," said Song Myung-sub, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities in Seoul.

"Apple will continue to dominate the tablet market as Amazon appears to be the only viable threat at the moment and other vendors, including Samsung, continue to struggle."

Lawyers for Apple declined to comment after the ruling, but getting a delay in lifting the temporary sales ban could give time for an appeal to be launched.

The ruling is, however, a timely boost for Samsung ahead of the busy pre-Christmas shopping season. While the Australian market is not large, it is a key launch market for Apple products outside the United States.

"Samsung's Christmas elves will be rushing to prepare Galaxy Tab orders," said Tim Renowden, analyst at research firm Ovum. "The well-regarded Galaxy Tab series provides some of the leading alternatives to Apple's iPad."

Apple was granted an injunction against Samsung in October, temporarily barring Australian sales of the Galaxy 10.1 tab, which had been seen as the hottest competitor to Apple's iPad until Amazon.com Inc launched its Kindle Fire.

Amazon said this week it saw a surge in sales of its tablet devices on the crucial "Black Friday" shopping day after Thanksgiving.

Samsung is the world's top smartphone maker, but a distant second to Apple in tablets. The intensifying legal battle has undermined its efforts to close the gap.

Apple also filed a preliminary injunction request in Germany on Monday to ban sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, a re-designed version of 10.1-inch Galaxy model, whose sales are already banned in that market.

"We believe the (Australian) ruling clearly affirms that Apple's legal claims lack merit," Samsung said in a statement, adding it would soon make an announcement on the market availability of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia.

Justice Lindsay Foster told the court he would grant a stay on orders until Friday midnight ET, noting Apple would have to go to the High Court if it wanted this extended.

BATTLE IN 10 COUNTRIES

Apple and Samsung have been locked in an acrimonious battle in 10 countries involving smartphones and tablets since April, with the Australian dispute centering on touch-screen technology used in Samsung's new tablet.

Apple successfully moved to block Samsung from selling its tablets in Germany and a case in the Netherlands has forced Samsung to modify some smartphone models.

The quarrel had triggered expectations that some of the pair's $5 billion-plus relationship may be up for grabs. Samsung counts Apple as its biggest customer and makes parts central to Apple's mobile devices.

The legal battle in Australia doesn't stop at tablet computers. Samsung has sought to block sales of Apple's latest iPhone 4S, which went on sale early last month, by filing preliminary sales injunction requests in four countries, including Australia.

An Australian court has agreed to hear that case in March and April, with sales allowed to continue as normal ahead of the hearing on alleged patent infringements.

Shares in Samsung, valued at around $140 billion, were flat in a Seoul market down 0.5 percent.

It’s a good time to live in South Korea, at least if you’re a Samsung fan. After confirming the arrival of an LTE variant of the Galaxy Note, it looks like Samsung is packing the local retail version of the Galaxy Nexus with a free extended battery and the requisite cover. According to SK Samsung mobile blog Naver, the units sold in the country will have two batteries and two covers in the box.

The Korean version will be released soon, and it’s got the standard 1750mAh. But the second, slightly larger battery on display is labelled as 2000mAh, which isn’t a huge bump, but every bit helps. For comparison, the battery in the US LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus will be 1850mAh, if Verizon would be so kind as to release it sometime this decade. On the US version the entire phone has been subtly redesigned with a thicker chassis to accommodate the larger battery and LTE radio, but it looks like the 2000mAh battery on display in South Korea will only need a swappable cover.

So, why the extra hardware? Maybe Samsung just wanted to include a treat for high-end customers in their home country. In any case, it’s a pretty good indication that the battery will eventually become available for the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus in other markets. I’m sure other Nexus users would appreciate the option.

We try out a handful of vehicles to see if Siri can be used while you're behind the wheel.

The South Korean company Samsung Electronics announced the availability of high-performance dual-core mobile processor Exynos 5250 a new generation based on the core Cortex-A15 2 GHz, and for the first time in the industry supports the display resolution WQXGA (2560x1600).

According to the manufacturer, the model of the processor will be installed in the Tablet PC on the market which tends to increase the display resolution that must be satisfied with itself and with the release of Exynos 5250.

Samsung Exynos 5250 is made of 32-nm HKMG (High-K Metal Gate - metal gate with a high dielectric constant) process technology and has a capacity of 14,000 DMIPS, which, according to the manufacturer, more than almost two times (7,500 DMIPS) modern dual-core Cortex- A9 processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz.

In the display controller to improve energy efficiency, built-in function support still image, which disables the additional units of the processor responsible for the formation and transmission of images.

In addition, the processor is integrated 3D graphics accelerator that supports stereoscopic (3D) displays, as well as increased memory bandwidth, which is the data transfer rate of up to 12.8 GB / sec.

Mass production is scheduled to Samsung Exynos 5250 by the second quarter of next year.

Here are some unboxing pics of my new Samsung Galaxy Nexus. My first impression was that the box was very long but the Nexus actually doesn't feel so big. It is the same width as Galaxy S2 but a tad longer. I like the curve that makes the phone feel good to hold. I also love the metallic silver color. The screen is absolutely gorgeous! I find it excellent despite it being pentile and it is not noticeable. ICS is fast and is the best Android version to date. I find the speaker to be quite weak. I am using it without a screen protector so we'll see how that goes. Well, I am off to enjoy my new toy...I need to unlock the bootloader and root the device...

Ok, so I decided to create a new thread for two reasons. First, I started that thread before I created PSXPeria to throw around ideas with developers and stuff, but now it's a beta test and I need feedback from regular users, not just developers. Secondly, not everyone can post in the developer section and not all users browse the developer section. So with a new release, I'll make a new thread. Hope the mods are ok with this.

Anyways, if you don't know what PSXPeria is, it's a tool that allows you to convert PSX games to work with Sony's emulator that is included with Crash Bandicoot. That way, you can play any PSX game using Sony's emulator.

How is this better than FPSE/psx4driod?
-PSXPeria is free and open source
-PSXPeria compresses ROMs
-PSXPeria supports the touchpads
-PSXPeria is SOMETIMES more compatible (and sometimes not)
-PSXPeria games show up in the playstation pocket app
-PSXPeria sometimes renders more smooth

What do I need to run PSXPeria Tool?

Compatibility
Sometimes, a game will work MUCH better (like from unplayable quality to perfect) if you enable software rendering. More details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1220541
Also, help us fill our compatibility chart when you're testing games: https://github.com/yifanlu/PSXperia/wiki/Compatibility

Tablet S/P
I don't have a Sony Tablet, so I can't test anything tablet related. I'll try to write patches for the tablet's emulator but I have no idea if it works or not. If anyone wants to donate a sony tablet to me, I wouldn't mind developing for it more. (I also have some ideas for unlocking it that I want to try).

"This APK is not supported."
If you get this, I need to manually write a patch for that APK. Currently, I will only do this for Crash Bandicoot 1.0.3 and higher. Send me a copy of the APK and I'll include a patch for it in the next release.

WebGL is supported on the 2011 Xperia smartphones with the latest software update. Here we see demos of Sony Ericsson liquid identity, Three.js (showing the head of Walt Disney) and Ninja heads. Read more on http://developer.sonyericsson.com

In the latest software upgrade we did for the 2011 Xperia™ phones, we’ve included WebGL™ support. By doing so, Sony Ericsson is the first mobile phone manufacturer to support WebGL for the Android web browser. WebGL basically makes it possible to extend the capability of the JavaScript programming language to allow it to generate interactive 3D graphics within the web browser. Read more about Sony Ericsson’s WebGL support after the jump, and find out about special considerations to keep in mind when developing 3D web applications targeting touch-enabled devices.
In this article, Anders Isberg from Sony Ericsson’s Technology Reseach department explains more about WebGL and what to think of when you develop 3D web applications for touch-enabled devices. If you scroll down, you will also find three WebGL examples that you can browse to from the Android browser, if you have the latest software on your 2011 Xperia™ phone. You can also check out how it looks in the video above.
***
Earlier this year, I made a blog post about an internal WebGL research project on how WebGL could be implemented in phones. Based on the feedback we received back then, we decided to launch support for WebGL in the latest software upgrade we rolled out for the 2011 Xperia™ phones during this autumn and winter. Now let’s take a closer look at what WebGL support means for mobile.

Anders Isberg, Sony Ericsson.

What is required to implement a WebGL application?
Unlike other 3D web technologies, WebGL will not require any plug-in modules. Once the device is WebGL enabled, no further installations are required, and developers can go ahead and explore the WebGL™ functionality. To learn how to develop WebGL applications, we recommend visiting one of the following online resources that gives an introduction on WebGL application development, for example, Learning WebGL or the Khronos WebGL Tutorial.
Due to the fact that WebGL is a low level API, the technical threshold is rather high if you are new to developing WebGL applications. However, there is no reason to be scared by this. There are several JavaScript frameworks available that make it easier to create WebGL applications. Several of these can be found on the Khronos WebGL Wiki.
Navigating and interacting with 3D web applications
Most of the existing WebGL applications available on the web are tailored for a desktop environment. Consequently, those applications are making use of the W3C DOM Mouse and Keyboard events to navigate and control the WebGL application. However, on a mobile device, the touch events must be used to navigate and control the 3D scene. The Android web browser supports three basic touch events that can be used to navigate and control the WebGL application:
touchstart: generated when the finger is placed on a selected DOM element.
touchmove: generated when a finger is moved over a DOM element.
touchend: generated when the finger is removed from a DOM element.
The following code example shows how an event listener is assigned to touchmove event on a WebGL accelerated HTML Canvas element:
// Add an event listener on the WebGL™ canvas

webglcanvas.addEventListener('touchmove', onTouchMove);

function onTouchMove (event) {

// Cancel the default event handler

event.preventDefault();

// Readout the current X and Y coordinate relative the viewport

var currentX = event.targetTouches[0].clientX;

var currentY = event.targetTouches[0].clientY;

}
In many cases, the same code used to handle mouse movements can be reused for touch events. There are also frameworks available to simplify the handling of touch events. For example, there is a jQuery plugin that unifies touch and mouse events across platforms, as well as a Mobile jQuery that has support for high level events like swipe.
Considerations when developing for mobile
Devices such as Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ pro are equipped with a 1 GHz Snapdragon™ processor and an Adreno™ 205 graphics processor, so even if the processing power is not in parity with desktop computers, there are enough processing capabilities to create astonishing 3D web applications. Check out the video in the beginning to see some examples of WebGL running on a 2011 Xperia™ phone. You can also check out these examples by browsing to them from the Android browser on your 2011 Xperia™ phone, if you have the latest software. Just click one of the links to the demos below. Please be patient while the demos are loading, it might take some time.
WebGL-based interactive 3D demo of the Sony Ericsson logo.
WebGL-based interactive 3D demo of Walt Disney.
WebGL-based interactive 3D demo of two Ninjas.
When working with WebGL in mobile devices, it is important to take a look under the hood to get good performance. It is essential to consider how the shaders are written, how many polygons that are used in the 3D model, and to select textures carefully. At Developer World, we have published a blog post called Optimising shader performance for the Xperia™ PLAY, which includes several useful tips that can be used to enhance the performance.
One limitation in the Android browser is that web workers are not supported. For some WebGL frameworks that could be a limiting factor. For example, the WebGL framework three.js implements resource loading with web workers. In the WebGL examples listed earlier you can see how this can be solved by using a JavaScript shim layer that emulates web workers. More information about this topic is available at the Google Code Web Workers Emulation project site.
Hopefully this has given you enough information (and confidence!) to get you started with your own WebGL project! Good luck!

It provides the necessary management capabilities to allow IT departments to confidently oversee the use of both company-owned and employee-owned mobile devices within their organizations.”

RIM is the leading provider of enterprise mobility solutions with over 90 percent of the Fortune 500 provisioning BlackBerry devices today. The enterprise market for smartphones and tablets continues to grow in both the company-provisioned and employee-owned (Bring Your Own Device or BYOD) categories. BYOD in particular has led to an increase in the diversity of mobile devices in use in the enterprise and new challenges for CIOs and IT departments as they struggle to manage and control wireless access to confidential company information on the corporate network. This has resulted in increased demand for mobile device management solutions.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion brings together the market-leading BlackBerry® Enterprise Server (version 5.0.3) for BlackBerry smartphones; new management capabilities for BlackBerry PlayBook tablets built on BlackBerry Enterprise Server technology; and mobile device management for smartphones and tablets running Android and iOS operating systems.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will provide the following mobile device management capabilities for all supported mobile devices*:

• Asset management
• Configuration management
• Security and policy definition and management
• Secure and protect lost or stolen devices (remote lock, wipe)
• User- and group-based administration
• Multiple device per user capable
• Application and software management
• Connectivity management (Wi-Fi®, VPN, certificate)
• Centralized console
• High scalability

BlackBerry smartphones will continue to benefit from the many advantages of the end-to-end BlackBerry solution including the same advanced IT management, security and control available with BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3, which is part of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. These advanced features include BlackBerry® Balance™ technology supporting the use of a single device for both work and personal purposes without compromising the organization’s need to secure, manage and control confidential information; over 500 IT policies; over-the-air app and software installation and management; high availability; and much more. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will also introduce new self-service functionality for employees to secure lost or stolen BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is currently in early beta testing with select enterprise customers. RIM is now accepting customer nominations for the closed beta program which will start in January, and general availability is expected in late March.

* Device security, manageability and controls will continue to vary according to the inherent capabilities of the individual device operating systems.
