Disposing of 800 positions will cost Motorola Mobility $27 million in severance and $4 million for facility closures as it prepares to be acquired by Google

Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., the mobile-phone maker that agreed to be bought by Google Inc., expects to incur $31 million in costs as it cuts 800 jobs, according to a regulatory filing.

The pretax costs include $27 million in severance and $4 million for closing facilities and will be recorded this quarter, Libertyville, Illinois-based Motorola Mobility said yesterday in a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The moves were approved Oct. 24, the company said.

Motorola Mobility is reining in costs as it prepares to complete its acquisition by Mountain View, California-based Google Inc. The $12.5 billion deal was announced Aug. 15.

“Motorola Mobility continues to focus on improving its financial performance by taking actions to manage the company’s costs,” Jennifer Weyrauch-Erickson, a spokeswoman for Motorola Mobility, said in a statement. She said the efforts are unrelated to the proposed acquisition.

On Oct. 27, Motorola Mobility announced financial results that beat analyst estimates as sales climbed 11 percent to $3.26 billion. The company is still losing money, though its loss narrowed to $32 million, or 11¢ a share, from a loss of $34 million a year earlier.

Google is buying Motorola Mobility to gain access to mobile patents and move into the hardware business. Chief Executive Officer Larry Page said the company would use Motorola Mobility’s more than 17,000 patents to protect Android supporters in licensing and legal disputes with rivals such as Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Motorola Mobility shareholders will vote on the acquisition Nov. 17.

LTE Data Plans

Customers can choose from tiered data plans starting as low as $15 per month. Existing smartphone customers do not have to make changes to their data plan. All plans include access to AT&T’s national Wi-Fi network of more than 29,000 hotspots.

DataPlus provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data for just $15 per month. An additional 200 MB of data usage is $15.
DataPro provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data for $25 per month. An additional 1 GB of data is $10. Customers who want to use their device as a mobile hotspot can sign up for DataPro 4GB for $45 a month, which lets you tether or share your data connection across multiple devices.
Customers can view all smartphone data plans at www.att.com/dataplans.

LTE Deployments

AT&T continues to expand its 4G LTE footprint. The four markets launching Nov. 6 join Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, which were launched in September. AT&T is the only U.S. carrier providing 4G service using both HSPA+ and LTE. HSPA+, when combined with enhanced backhaul, provides customers with 4G speeds, meaning customers get a faster and more consistent 4G experience, even when outside of an AT&T LTE area. Customers of other carriers that have transitioned to 4G LTE without further speed upgrades to their existing networks are likely to see a jarring drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE coverage.

Quotes

“The two LTE-powered superphones will be our 20th and 21st Android devices in 2011, adding to an outstanding year of Android success,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “We’ve far exceeded our commitment to offer 12 new Android devices this year –now including our first 4G LTE smartphones. We’re delivering an incredible amount of innovation to our customers, which is a huge reason why more than half our post-paid subscribers are using a smartphone.”

“We are thrilled to continue growing our relationship with AT&T and excited for the HTC Vivid to be one of the first LTE devices on AT&T for the holiday season,” said Jason Mackenzie, president of global sales and marketing, HTC. “The HTC Vivid combines an exceptional display in a premium device that delivers a powerful smartphone to our customers through AT&T’s fast LTE and HSPA+ 4G networks.”

“AT&T’s LTE network allows for quicker access, smoother streaming and faster web experiences, especially when using the powerful Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket,” said Todd Pendleton, chief marketing officer, Samsung Telecommunications America. “Pairing the Galaxy S II Skyrocket with AT&T’s LTE speeds, creates the ultimate smartphone experience.”

First off, the community here is the best on the planet. I know I say that all the damn time, but it’s just so true. When I received a tip that Verizon stores were running ads for the HTC Rezound, I quickly jumped on Twitter to see if anyone was near a store and would be down for a stealth photo mission. Almost 30 people stepped up and delivered. So awesome.
Anyways, there it is in the ad-flesh. The Rezound with its super sexy red soft keys, Beats by Dre earbuds, and wait…Joe Jonas? We are still waiting for Verizon and HTC to announce this phone on Thursday (which we will be at by the way), but this gives us comfort in knowing that it’s the real deal. And sorry folks, no last minute name changes back to the Vigor or Incredible HD.
Random tip in our inbox tossed out the idea on Friday that Big Red may try to slip this phone in on the 14th (which is a Monday) since the DROID RAZR is expecting to be in stores on the 10th followed by the Galaxy Nexus on the 17th. Not sure I’m fully ready to believe Verizon would change up its release schedule to a Monday when they have gone with Thursdays for at least the last couple of years, but it almost seems like they should. This is quickly shaping up to be one of the biggest months in Android history.
Close up shot after the break.

Did you miss the release of the LiveKey SDK earlier this summer? No worries, it’s still around, and now we’ve updated it with an emulator. The LiveKey™ functionality was first introduced in the new LiveSound™ hi-fi headset, and using it gives you direct access to phone functions or applications with the click of a button. Maybe you want a simple speed dial to your mom, or the weather report to be read by text to voice? The only your limit is your imagination!
We met with Magnus Helgstrand from Sony Ericsson Smart Extras™ to find out more about LiveKey™ app extensions.

Magnus Helgstrand, Sony Ericsson.

Magnus Helgstrand is one of the engineers at Sony Ericsson working with the LiveKey™ SDK, which enables you to create app extensions that can make use of the LiveKey™ functionality. This functionality was first introduced in our latest Android headphones, the LiveSound™ hi-fi headset.
Magnus, what makes the LiveKey™ functionality so interesting?
– With the LiveKey™ button on your headset, you can reach applications and functions in your phone without having to remove the phone from your pocket or bag. I have myself experimented with text to speech, and with a couple of “hacks,” I can now have my phone to read me the latest SMS, and time of day, when I press the LiveKey™. I strongly believe small simple use-cases on the go will be perfect for LiveKey™.
So what are your ambitions with the LiveKey™ SDK?
– Our ambition with the SDK is to make it as easy as possible for developers to make new applications supporting LiveKey™ or to add support for LiveKey™ in the next update of their already published applications. We have included an example implementation to kick start developers. This example code is free to use and published under the liberal BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) license.
How does it work?
– The application called LiveWare™ manager is the hub of the LiveKey™ functionality. It is pre-installed on Sony Ericsson phones, and can be downloaded from Android™ market. As a user, you can find and select LiveKey™ enabled applications in LiveWare™ manager. This is the way you set what functionality to use in your LiveKey™ headset.
– When the user presses the LiveKey™ button, the selected apps will get intents with information about LiveKey™ presses and releases. This information will make it possible for the app to react with different functionality on for example long presses and double presses.

What’s new in the LiveKey™ SDK?
– In this version of the SDK, we have included a LiveKey™ emulator. The LiveKey™ emulator will emulate a key press from the LiveSound™ headset, allowing developers without access to a LiveSound™ headset to develop and test LiveKey™ functionality in their applications.
What are the benefits for a developer? Why should you try this SDK out?
– The benefits for developers are at least two-fold. The developers will get a new interaction model with their apps, making them relevant in new situations. The other advantage is visibility. Users with LiveKey™ headsets can search Android market for new LiveKey™ enabled applications, which will make LiveKey™ enabled applications stand out from the noise on Android market.
The new LiveKey SDK includes two code examples, documentation and a standalone emulator .apk file. You can learn more and download it from the LiveKey developer section of Developer World. If you have any questions, feel free to drop a question in the LiveKey SDK forum thread on Google Groups. We’ll come back with an answer as soon as possible!

As mentioned in the blog post last Friday we are preparing for an upgrade marathon week here at the blog and every day we will dig deeper into one of the new features in our Android 2.3.4 upgrade. First out is Facebook inside Xperia™ 2.0.
Sony Ericsson has worked closely with Facebook to ensure that connectivity to Facebook is not just to be found in the Facebook application but to integrate the experience throughout the most relevant parts of an Xperia smartphone such as the music player, phonebook, photo gallery, calendar and lockscreen. If you want to experience what Facebook inside Xperia would look like in your phone then check out the demo we have created for our Facebook channel.
Sharing of Music, Games and Apps
When listening to a song you really like in the music player you can press the “Like” button to share your favorite on Facebook. To share a game or an app you like, simply long press the app icon and pull it to the top of the screen where you’ll see a share icon.

Music & Video recommendations from friends
I often check Facebook when I have a minute to spare but if I see that a friend has recommended a You Tube video I don’t always have the time to check it out right away. With the widget “Friends’ music and & videos” on my home screen I can easily check out all recommendations done by my friends when I have the time to, without having to search for it in the flow of posts in the Facebook app.

Apps & Games recommendations from friends
When my friends recommend games and apps from their phones the way I described above, I get an overview in the widget “Friends’ games & applications”. I can then follow the link to Android Market and download the app to try it out myself.

Photo Gallery Integrations
Facebook is deeply integrated in the phones photo gallery. You can see all your own images uploaded to Facebook and read the comments and see who has liked it without even opening the Facebook app. Your friends most recent uploaded images also appear in your gallery.

Social Phonebook
Of course the phone book has also had a social make over. Your friends latest status update, birthday, photos and interests are all gathered in the phonebook along with the call and messaging history you have with that contact. Birthdays and other Facebook events are also added in phones calendar which means that it will be very tricky to come up with a good excuse for forgetting someone’s birthday;-)

Now you know what Facebook inside Xperia ™ is all about. Try it out yourself by upgrading your Xperia™ phone or checking out the demo on Facebook.
By the way, to make a screen shot you simple long press the power button and choose “Take screen shot”.

Xperia is taking social smartphones to a new level. Now you can see, share and like and comments on tracks and photos on Facebook straight from your music player or gallery. And check out what your friends are recommending with the music and apps widget. Why not share and suggest the apps you like and show the games you love?

As we wrote in our earlier blog post, Sony Ericsson China invited 10 students from the Sony Ericsson Hope Schools to visit Beijing and participate in the Beijing Marathon.
At 9 o’clock in the morning on the day of the Marathon, the ten students and Sony Ericsson employees including Magnus Ahlqvist, President of Sony Ericsson Greater China, set off in the race. Many Sony Ericsson employees had gathered to cheer for the runners and held up banners for them on both sides of the road.
We would like to congratulate all of the students and the Sony Ericsson employees who participated in the race on finishing their target routes successfully. And we would also like to thank all of the people who helped them to do so by cheering them on.
For their Beijing visit, the students were invited to stay with Sony Ericsson employees to experience ‘city life’. Organized visits to some of the key sights in Beijing were also arranged. To promote the importance of education, the students visited Beijing University and Tsinghua University. They also visited the Tiananmen Square to watch the flag-raising ceremony.
In the past several years, Sony Ericsson has worked to promote the development of charity in China. Going forward, Sony Ericsson will continue this work through various activities, always with the special Sony Ericsson touch: Innovative and energetic!

HD video bridge from Motorola Mobility allows Altibox to roll out new video services to attract and retain customers

Altibox customers will soon enjoy an enhanced viewing experience with the introduction of Motorola Mobility's VAP2400 wireless video bridge. Using the VAP2400, Altibox customers will be able to wirelessly share a full range of video services; taking interactive TV and video on demand to TVs and other IP-enabled devices across the home.

To date, the installation of multi-room video services has relied on unsightly wires running through the home, while wireless solutions have proved unreliable and expensive. Motorola’s VAP2400 streams high definition video over the Wi-Fi® spectrum throughout the home to reach further and enable a high quality video viewing experience, even through thick walls. Furthermore, the easy installation and set-up means Altibox customers can benefit from wireless video out of the box without having to wait for an installation engineer.

“At Altibox, we are focused on providing an extensive portfolio of easy to install video services that deliver an enhanced subscriber experience,” said Per-Andre Rykhus, vice president, marketing, sales & products, Altibox. “The Motorola VAP2400 will help us to deliver new services and enhancements, including wireless HD interactive TV and Video on Demand, to any room in the home.”

“The Motorola VAP2400 video bridge is the most innovative solution of its kind, and today’s announcement with Altibox demonstrates our focus on helping service providers differentiate their services and minimize subscriber churn,” said Steve McCaffery, vice president and general manager, Home business EMEA, Motorola Mobility. “We’re committed to delivering advanced, game-changing technology that changes the way video services are deployed in the home whilst allowing service providers like Altibox to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market.”

The Motorola VAP2400 will be available to Altibox subscribers from Q4 2011.

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 12.8% year over year in the third quarter of 2011 (3Q11), as smartphone growth declined in key mature markets. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 393.7 million units in 3Q11 compared to 348.9 million units in the third quarter of 2010. However, the 12.8% growth was higher than IDC's forecast of 9.3% for the quarter and stronger than the 9.8% growth in 2Q11.

It was also the second-lowest growth rate for the overall mobile phone market over the past two years; a reflection of delayed smartphone purchases and conservative consumer spending last quarter. Economically mature regions, such as the United States and Western Europe, were hardest hit as shipment volume to both regions declined on a year-over-year basis.

"The combination of economic uncertainty and anticipation over fourth quarter or late third quarter product releases caused some consumers to delay their smartphone purchases," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. "Many waited for products such as the iPhone 4S, which was announced after the quarter closed, or Research In Motion's BlackBerry 7 phone series, which were released in the final weeks of the quarter."

However, smartphones drive the overall mobile phone market and will continue to do so in the quarters and years to come.

"Smartphone centricity continues to be the hallmark of the mobile phone market," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team. "Two years ago, smartphones comprised just a small portion of overall shipments among the leading vendors. Today, that proportion has grown considerably, thanks in large part to LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson making Android smartphones a priority. At the same time, the growing presence of companies focused exclusively on the smartphone market - Apple, HTC, and RIM - also demonstrate the impact that smartphones have had on the mobile phone market as a whole."

Regional Analysis

-- In Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APeJ), feature phones recovered in the third quarter on the back of Nokia's resolved inventory channel issues in China combined with the strong showing of its dual-SIM handsets across emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia. With Nokia fighting back at the Chinese low-end competitors, the proliferation of these smaller brands has slowed as margins hit razor-thin levels. APeJ smartphone growth last quarter was driven primarily by Samsung and HTC, as well as ZTE in China. In Japan, the market rebounded sharply after two quarters of either low single-digit growth or outright market decline following the natural disasters of this spring.

-- The Western European phone market declined as a result of lower demand for both feature phones and smartphones. The smartphone device type growth was mainly driven by mid-tier Android devices. High-end smartphone growth was negatively impacted by Apple's fourth-quarter iPhone 4S launch, which caused consumers to delay purchases. Meanwhile, Nokia's transition from the Symbian to the Windows Phone operating system as its primary smartphone platform led to a transition. Feature phones declined as consumers that replaced their devices upgraded to smartphones while others held on to their devices for longer periods of time. Overall the Central Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEMA) markets showed strong growth due in large part to Nokia's rebound in the regions. Bucking its global troubles, Nokia had a very strong 3Q11 due to feature phone growth. Its smartphone decline continued, however, but it remained the market leader in the region. Among the niche smartphone brands, HTC did particularly well in some markets, including Russia. RIM continues to make progress in the Middle East and Africa, but fared less well in Central and Eastern Europe.

-- In North America, new iPhone demand went unfulfilled during 3Q11, leaving the door open for other companies to launch their competing devices. Research In Motion, which had not introduced a new BlackBerry smartphone during the entire first half of 2011, debuted several new models running on the new BB OS7 platform. Similarly, LG, Motorola, and Samsung unveiled their own respective Android flagship models, keeping the Android platform front and center in the smartphone market.

-- The Latin America market growth was driven by smartphones though some users delayed purchases in anticipation of new hero device launches in the region. However, more touchscreen smartphones hit the market as vendors seek to broaden the appeal of smartphones to users. Meanwhile, Greater China vendors released new high-end devices in an attempt to grow market share in the region.

Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors

Nokia reversed a global market share on a sequential basis last quarter thanks to stronger feature phone sales in key regions as well as the clearing of inventory backlogs in traditional strongholds, namely China and Europe, which led to a sharp year-over-year shipment and share decline last quarter. Nokia's smartphone fortunes could improve in quarters to come now that it has introduced the Nokia Lumia devices, powered by Windows Phone 7, to markets where its brand is still relatively strong and in areas where the company has lost share over the past two years.

Samsung registered double-digit growth compared to the third quarter a year ago and also outpaced the market. The company's growth was again driven by smartphone sales, such as the Galaxy S2. Smartphone sales were notably higher in emerging markets including China. Samsung outpaced the feature phone market as well in terms of growth. The vendor didn't close the market share gap on Nokia for the top mobile phone position, but it remains within striking distance.

LG Electronics maintained its position as the number 3 mobile vendor worldwide for the twelfth quarter in a row, but continued soft demand for both its feature phones and smartphones led to volume levels not seen since 2Q 2007. With only a few new devices launched and an aging feature phone portfolio, LG's warnings of lower year-over-year shipment volume appears to have come to fruition. By the end of the year, LG's grasp on the number 3 position may be loosened as Apple's aggressive smartphone campaign takes hold in 4Q 2011.

ZTE jumped into the number 4 position thanks to momentum carried into 3Q 2011 with key devices shipping into strategic regions. In China, ZTE has nearly doubled its smartphone volumes from the previous quarter, while within North America, ZTE's entry-level voice-centric phones at AT&T have gained greater depth. At the same time, ZTE's target of 12 million smartphone shipments worldwide in 2011 became more of a reality with the introduction of two new Android-powered smartphones for the North American market.

Apple gained share and posted the third-highest growth rate of any Top 5 vendor but dropped to the number 5 position globally. Global iPhone shipments declined sequentially during the same quarter that company founder Steve Jobs handed the CEO reins to Tim Cook. The decline, not coincidentally, happened as Apple readied itself for the 4S launch, which many waited for. Apple's ability to upgrade 3GS users to the 4S, for example, and make continued inroads into developing economies, where it has been less successful, will help dictate the company's smartphone fortunes in the future.

A public release is not possible at this time for a LOT of reasons. So please don't ask.

EDIT: Also, unfortunately, we can't explain how it's done — it's also not possible just using publicly available tools, so that wouldn't be useful anyway.

(Once there is a public jailbreak for the iPhone 4S, this should become somewhat easier to distribute. No ETAs there, though: I have no clue when that will be.)

A recent survey commissioned by Motorola Mobility polled 1,000 smartphone owners who use their devices for both personal and professional purposes (known as prosumers) and found that although they are aware of the security concerns associated with mobile data, they are not taking necessary steps to keep their personal and work information secure.

In fact, a large majority, 73 percent, said they are concerned about security, and 1 in 4 of these prosumers said they’d rather share their toothbrush over their phone. And yet, they continue to load their devices up with sensitive information, leaving themselves highly vulnerable to having that data hacked or stolen. Several dangerous habits and behaviors respondents revealed include:

Forty-five percent confess they’ve never installed security applications on their smartphones
More than one third store critical personal information, like email passwords and bank account numbers, on their smartphones
Nearly half have of respondents log into an unsecure wireless network using their smartphone
Less than 6 in 10 would reset their work email password if they lost their phone
Only 12 percent consider security features to be a key consideration when shopping for a new phone
It’s a good thing Motorola Mobility’s recent devices, such as the DROID RAZR by Motorola, DROID BIONIC by Motorola, and Motorola Photon 4G, are all up to the challenge. Motorola Mobility has taken extra initiatives to deem these devices “Business Ready” – meaning they come with security and productivity features above and beyond standard Android software to keep work and personal data safe.

New composition enables OLED and next generation liquid crystal displays

CORNING, N.Y., – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced the commercial launch of Corning Lotus™ Glass, an environmentally friendly, high-performance display glass developed to enable cutting-edge technologies, including organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and next generation liquid crystal displays (LCD). The company made the announcement at FPD International, an industry trade show in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan, on Oct. 26.

Corning Lotus Glass helps support the demanding manufacturing processes of both OLED and liquid crystal displays for high performance, portable devices such as smart phones, tablets, and notebook computers.

Corning formulated Corning Lotus Glass to perform exceptionally well in low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) and oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane manufacturing environments.

“Corning Lotus Glass has a high annealing point that delivers the thermal and dimensional stability our customers require to produce high-performance displays,” said Andrew Filson, worldwide commercial director, Display Technologies, and vice president, Corning Holding Japan GK. “Because of its intrinsic stability, it can withstand the thermal cycles of customer processing better than conventional LCD glass substrates. This enables tighter design rules in advanced backplanes for higher resolution and faster response time.”

The thermal consistency of Corning Lotus Glass allows it to retain its shape and surface quality during high-temperature processing. This helps guard against thermal sag and warp, which improves the integration of components onto the glass.

Corning Lotus Glass has been qualified and is in production.

Produced using Corning’s proprietary fusion process, Corning Lotus Glass offers the advantages of the company’s other industry-leading glass substrates – including a pristine surface and advanced thickness control.

The end result is a thin, portable display device that consumes less power while delivering superior picture quality.

“Corning will continue to develop innovative glass compositions to enable the high-performance displays that will drive tomorrow’s consumer electronics,” Filson said.

ARM Cortex-A7 and big.LITTLE -- John Kalkman, VP LSI, Samsung Electronics

A hands-on video of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android smartphone.

If you've got yourself a Samsung Galaxy S II and you just can't wait to get Android 4.0 up and running on your smartphone, then we've got some bad news - you're going to have to.

Wait, that is. For the good news is that Samsung Italy has confirmed that the update is coming - but possibly not until Q2 2012.

Ice Cream Sandwich will also hit other high end Sammy devices including the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus around the same time.

If the wait frustrates you then take comfort in the fact that at least you're definitely getting it - older Samsung phone owners are yet to hear if their devices will have the minerals required for Google's latest mobile OS.

Hugo Barra, product management director of Android stated earlier this week that there were plans to get Nexus S running Android 4.0 shortly after the release of the Galaxy Nexus device but that the original Google branded Nexus One is just too old to come to the party - it may be that the Samsung Galaxy S suffers the same fate.

Update : the confirmation is not official but it is an expectation for the next updates. Only Samsung Korea will confirm the roadmap of aggironamenti.

Italy has talked about the upcoming Samsung Android 4.0 update assuming that the new Galaxy will receive the update to Android 4.0 during the next year. The device would be mentioned:

Galaxy S2
Galaxy Notes
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 8.9
Galaxy Tab 7.7
Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
Missing devices and low mid-range and the "old" Galaxy S i9000. Samsung has yet to assess the time to port the new version on the high-end device and then verify that everything is replicable also on line cheapest device (however, only WVGA). Thus were not yet evaluated the choices for the Galaxy W and the like.
For the high end, however it comes out of a roll which should begin in Q2 2012 although there is uncertainty about the dates.

Why wait until November for your official taste of Ice Cream Sandwich?

It was just the other day when news hit about a working build of Ice Cream Sandwich being ported to the Nexus S, and while that's all well and good, just seeing the many photos wasn't enough. We wanted in on the action, too, because when we see a shiny new toy, we have to play with it.

After spending a few long hours rooting and hacking our own Nexus S, we're happy to report that Operation Ice Cream Sandwich was a success. The current build we have running isn't complete, so some features, like Face Unlock, are unavailable. Still, there's plenty to explore, and man does the Google's new OS taste good. Check out the video to see a full tour, and stay tuned for more Ice Cream Sandwich goodness.

We’ll try to keep you continuously updated on the kit release. For a complete list of kits released up until now, please check comments below.

Have you ever thought about using hidden Android™ APIs? A few weeks ago, Erik Hellman from Sony Ericsson’s Technology research department presented a few examples of how these APIs could be used at Droidcon in London, and at Mobile Monday in Bucharest. We have now made Erik’s hidden API code examples available for download.
Download and learn more after the jump.
In every Android release, there are a large number of hidden APIs available. The hidden APIs can be used by applications, but they are not very easy to find unless you know what you are looking for. The reason to hide certain APIs may differ. Some may not be regarded as stable enough to promote, others may be subject to change. Several other reasons may exist. Nonetheless, by knowing about these APIs, you definitely have the chance to get ahead of your competition by creating some unique hidden API-based functionality in your apps.
The hidden API code examples, created by Erik Hellman, consist of four different examples. Find out more about them below.
ReadSMS code example
This is a small code example that is intended to show how an application can read the internal SMS database. The hidden part here is the content URI to the SMS database: “content://sms/inbox”. This code example only requires the following permission to read SMS: “android.permission.READ_SMS”.
Tethering code example
This code example demonstrates how an app can use Wi-Fi with the Java reflection methods. This code example must be signed with a system certificate, and it must also share the User Id with the system. The system User Id is declared shared by declaration in the Android manifest:

package="com.sonyericsson.tetheringdemo"

android:sharedUserId=="android.uid.system"

android:versionCode="1"

android:versionName="1.0">
This code example also requires a set of Wi-Fi permissions:

The hidden API here is the broadcast intent: “android.net.wifi.WIFI_AP_STATE_CHANGED”. This is received by the broadcast receiver in the project. The hidden method in this class is called setWifiApConfiguration and it is reached using the Java reflection method in that class.
WifiConfiguration config = new WifiConfiguration();

config.SSID = "EriksOpenWifi";

config.allowedKeyManagement.set(WifiConfiguration.KeyMgmt.NONE);

String setWifiApConfigurationMethodName = "setWifiApConfiguration";

Method setWifiApConfigurationMethod = wifiManager.getClass().getMethod(setWifiApConfigurationMethodName, WifiConfiguration.class);

result = (Boolean) setWifiApConfigurationMethod.invoke(wifiManager, config);
This code snippet is used to reach this code:
public boolean setWifiApConfiguration(WifiConfiguration wifiConfig) {

try {

mService.setWifiApConfiguration(wifiConfig);

return true;

} catch (RemoteException e) {

return false;

}

}
Overlay and Touch input code examples
These two code examples work together in order to demonstrate how to do touch input and how to draw a window on top of the currently active window. These code examples need system permissions, and must be run as system user.

android:sharedUserId="android.uid.system"

package="com.sonyericsson.overlaydemo"

android:versionCode="1"

android:versionName="1.0">
The two things requiring system privileges are the permission “.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED” and the direct interface to the window manager. To use the code example requiring the system certificate, you need to sign your apps with the keys of the system certificate. To try this, you can use a phone with a custom ROM.
Feedback and learning more
These are some examples showing how you can work with hidden APIs. To learn more, there are several resources available online. We especially recommend the five part hidden API introduction available at DevMaze. Here, you will not only learn how to work more with hidden APIs, but also how to get it to work in different phones.
Feel free to comment and ask questions on this topic, Erik Hellman and the rest of the Engineering team will try to answer your questions as soon as possible. What potential uses do you see in utilising these hidden APIs?
