While lots of handsets are now coming with Windows Mobile 6.1 out of the box, Verizon’s Palm Treo 700wx still runs on the dusty Windows Mobile 5 platform. Well, not anymore, as Palm has released a software upgrade that allows Treo 700wx owners to say au revoir to the old WM 5 and pump in the 6.0 edition of Windows Mobile. Nope, not the 6.1 version, unfortunately.
Of course, when put besides the likes of HTC Touch Diamond or Palm Treo Pro, the Treo 700wx might be seen as an outdated device. However, there are lots of Verizon users who still rely on it and they will surely be happy to find out that, as of now, the smartphone supports Windows Mobile 6.
Palm states that the new software upgrade, v 1.24, brings a set of new features like:
* Calendar functionality
* Support for HTML email
* Support for Office 2007
* Compatibility with Windows Vista
* E-mail Inbox search and e-mail hot keys
* Access to Microsoft SharePoint Server

Note that, unfortunately, only Verizon’s version of Treo 700wx qualifies for the upgrade. The versions of Sprint and Alltel will probably have to wait a bit longer until a newer OS reaches them.
In case there are users who want to buy a new Treo 700wx from Verizon Wireless, the North American carrier is selling the smartphone for $299 with the signing of a 2-yr contract agreement.
