The Samsung G400 can be regarded as a clamshell version of the Samsung Soul, a sleek 3.5G phone with a very large external display and a 5 megapixel camera, the SGH-G400 is a welcome sight for fans of folding handsets. One immediately noticeable feature of the Samsung G400 is the oversized external display - this 2.2" 320 x 240 pixel panel is actually the same size and resolution as the internal display. The exterior display is touch sensitive and has haptic feedback, somewhat similar to the Motorola RAZR2 range, although Samsung say that it is a full touchscreen where the RAZR2 is a little limited. The camera is a 5 megapixel unit with autofocus and flash, and there is a secondary video calling camera. Unusually, the primary camera is situated on the hinge, so when the phone is opened up it faces the user. It's a bit hard to see what purpose this design quirk serves. The G400's camera also has face recognition and an image stabiliser, although there is no word on video capture resolution.
It's an HSDPA phone, meaning that the SGH-G400 is capable of download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps where 3.5G network coverage allows. On top of that, this is a tri-band GSM device with GPRS and EDGE data. The G400 does not support WiFi.
As you would expect, there's a multimedia player on the Samsung G400. In this case, it supports MP3, WMA, e-AAC+, imelody, WAV and MMF file types, plus video playback. There's an FM radio with RDS too.
In addition, the Samsung G400 has microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth 2.0 plus a web browser and support for Google Mail. The G400 measures 103 x 52 x 15mm, but Samsung have not specified weight or battery life.
