The Samsung D800 has a slider type construction that offers exceptional features. This attractive phone runs on rich and reliable software, designed to better support its functions. Aside from its new look, 1.3 megapixel camera, and music playback features, it also offers TV-out support, 3D sound with simulation settings and a brilliant screen display. Once again Samsung produced another handset in slider format that has taken is reputation to a higher level. Released in November 2005, the Samsung D800 is notable for its eye catching design that comes in black and chrome colour scheme. When you say black and chrome, it gives the idea of an oldies look. However, this is not the case for the reason that the colour combination is well applied on the phone. It simply gives off an elegant and sophisticated appearance.

Samsung is known for producing small phones in slider format. This time D800 has evolved from that look. At 15mm thick, the phone really shows its thin characteristic. It looks rather chunky as it is 52mm wide and 97mm tall. When pushed open, it extends to 130mm in height. With that being said, it actually feels comfortable to hold. Amazingly, D800 only weights 98g so its lightweight feature makes it more desirable. It also comes with a smooth opening slide mechanism for easier use.
As a successor of D600, it is very important to leave up to expectations. But this is rather impossible because they both house individual features. The Samsung D800 still carries QVGA TFT LCD screen which offers 240 x 320 pixels resolution and support 262k colour display. The LCD screen only differs in dimension as it measures 33mm in width and 44mm in height, just a few millimeters more than D600.

Its external keypad consists of navigation keys and five functional buttons. As said on reviews, the navigation key and number pad has a clumsy design as it lacks distinction with other buttons thus providing user inconvenience.

Messaging features of D800 include SMS, MMS, EMS and email. In addition, it also has a T9 dictionary to aid users while writing. D800 carries an intuitive and user friendly MMS editor which makes it easier for users to send pictures, video, sound and text. Its email function supports POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 formats.

D800 comes with an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera. The camera lens is located under the sliding mechanism so it can be protected from unnecessary scratches. Its camera applications include a view finder, digital zoom, photo effects with frames, and quality settings. It allows users to take pictures through Multi shot, Mosaic shot and Single shot options. The said Mosaic shot option allows the user to take several pictures in coordination with schemes pre installed in the phone, and then connect those photos into one image. Other camera functions include a video player and a video recorder which makes 60-minute records.

The handset also comes with music playback features. Its music player provides an organization function which lets the user sort his playlist. Other music features includes visualization setup, file repeat, equalizer and 3D effects. The equalizer function provides four pre-set modes of normal, classic, jazz and rock.

It supports MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-ACC+, and WMA music formats. Furthermore, it provides a voice recorder and voice recognition feature. It also allows the use of speakerphone through Bluetooth.

An 80MB built-in memory is also provide by the phone. The memory space is fairly enough to store up to 1,000 contacts in the phonebook and around 200 text messages. Its biggest drawback is the absence of a memory card slot. This will hinder the user from storing large numbers of pictures, video clips and music.

The Samsung D800 runs on EDGE technology for faster data transfer and synchronization. The handset provides a very efficient personal organizer. It has a calendar feature which organizes time, stores reminders, notes, and other tasks. It also provides an alarm clock which amazingly gets activated even if the handset is switched off. Other features include a currency and measurement converter, a calculator, a stopwatch, and a countdown option. It also offers TV output support and a smart picture editor which allows the user to modify pictures. D800 also comes with entertainment extras like the pre installed java games such as the Bobby Carrot and Time Rider 2.

D800 has an average overall performance. Battery life is at 3.5 hours of talk time and 220 hours of standby time. Its screen display is bright and sharp, audio quality for both speakerphone and headset is fine. Although its camera and music player does not stand out, the phone really provides the user with functional features.
